the drive is dying. you might be able to fix it long enough to recover the data with spinrite, but this requires a PC & $80. Drive Genius is about the same price for the mac version. That's about all you can do.

there should be more options in the mouse utility under the control panel... unless that's the one you tried already. the one from the boot camp utility doesn't let you do much.

what size or how much total drive space is your machine? it sounds like you may have a faulty drive, the seagate 60 & 80 gb drives are notorious for this. http://www.appleinsider.com/articles...te_drives.html

yeah, you might be losing the hard drive. try unplugging the internal hard drive & then see if it will boot off the DVD. The bad drive might be tying up the IDE bus if it's failing hard or there's a short circuit in the controller board.
