  • If you're not afraid of playing in the Terminal, try this: 1: Open Terminal 2: type cd ~ and hit return (don't forget the space) 3: type sudo rm Desktop/[name of the offending file] and hit return 4: type an administrator password at the promp…
  • I don't know about that, but subjectively Panther is so much faster than Jag it's untrue: my Cube now boots in 20 seconds dead and the Finder doesn't wait anywhere near as long before completing an operation. I rarely find myself waiting for my Mac …

  • Hellfire, where did that come from? Ho hum... Interestingly, it's not just the 12" PowerBook mobo in a different case: the power socket's on the other side and, since the cooling vent on the left-hand side is higher up, it looks like it's taking …
  • Quote: Originally posted by Luca Rescigno If you just delete your system folder, you should be able to just drag a new system folder onto your hard drive in case you really need Classic for some reason. I do just that: there's a complete OS 9…
  • Spit, polish, spit, polish, repeat... Yep, that is looking very tired and cartoony now (don't forget menubar widgets as well) and I wouldn't be surprised to see it change in some way soon: perhaps a melting effect? I can see this new chrome Ap…
  • Well, took the plunge on my 12" PB, okay so far: Ethernet's working happily, Keyboard/Mouse prefpane present and correct, though I've yet to see anything notably faster. I'm looking forward to doing my Cube (just as soon as it's finished this stu…
  • I've had my 12" since February: maxed the RAM before even booting it up, and it's been absolutely perfect. No issues with warpage of the screen or base, no dead/stuck pixels, no scatches, no nothing. Yes, the rubber feet did make a bid for freedo…
  • Quote: Originally posted by Luca Rescigno I do believe the Cube had a motherboard with at least one 90° angle on it, maybe four... wasn't the Cube's motherboard actually folded around the outside of the internal case? Erm, no (I speak from am…
  • Surely the ultimate answer to this question is Panther? Read and write desktop FTP, I'm lead to believe. Huge rockage all round
  • Thanks for that: long overdue, IMO
  • Not from Apple, but Video Viewer ($9 shareware) will display any incoming Firewire video signal full-screen. Cool options include transparent floating windows and the ability to use the video as your Desktop. Works a treat
  • cleaner's Dock icon tells you exactly how it's progressing: invaluable if you've got a big batch of transcodes in progress and want to surf in the meantime...
  • Quote: Originally posted by dnisbet I just think that to get the window back open by having to go back to the dock and moving to the mouse to do that (unless there's a keyboard shortcut??) a lot more hassle than just cycling through windows or ju…
  • One thing I've always found to be a pain is that SMB requires a username and password that is all-capitals when you log into the Mac from the Windows machine. Otherwise you get error -36. Logging into the Windows box from the Mac isn't as fussy, …
  • You're not burning HFS+ disks, by any chance? OS 8 can only read HFS
  • There's a handy guide to swapping Cube hard drives here: www.cubeowner.com/manuals/cube_harddrive.pdf: basically you just need a T8 Torx driver and the drive slides right out the side. For some reason Apple neglected to mention that you need to swap…
  • I've played about with Fontlab before, and in a market has precisely two players (one of which hasn't been updated in years), it's got to be the only choice. Nice and stable, well-integrated into OS X, and it works. Not much else I need to say. T…
  • Anybody going to play there later? Just installed it (everything seems to work), but I'd like to actually verify that the videoconferencing works as advertised... and see your smiling faces, of course!
  • Send it in: it may take two weeks, but I dare say Apple will send it on to wherever you are.
