The only way I can get Safari 3 to load a new site is to click on a link on a page, in the Bookmarks bar or in the Bookmarks menu. Safari 3 does nothing when I type in an address and click return.

Easy to do. In Safari Preferences under General, select New windows open with... Same Page.

Mine (40 GB) does the same sometimes, just in the left ear. But I've found that if you take it out of your ear and blow into it that usually fixes the distortion problem. YMMV, but that tip might save you from having to get the earbuds replaced.
