Apple grants US developers the same NFC features it was forced to provide in Europe
Nms said:I will NEVER, EVER , install apps on my Apple devices that DO NOT come from Apple App Store.
I live in Europe and this is one of the reasons I use Apple Devices. I TRUST Apple.
Don't trust EU, or wannabe devs that want to save pennies sacrificing security and TRUST provided by Apple. -
Drivers love CarPlay as car infotainment systems get worse overall
Does anyone know how much Apple charges for CarPlay? I'm sure most car manufacturers want the cheapest costing parts in their vehicles so I assume most use some form of free/cheap Android system with the least amount of programming necessary. I have an aftermarket Alpine deck which didn't cost that much (~$500 a few years ago) but that cost is probably 3x more than the vehicle manufacturer wants to pay. My deck connects to the OBD connecter providing a limited amount of vehicle information. It could easily provide much more information without much more programming costs. Of course, the vehicle manufacturers don't want customers having free access to engine codes to see what's wrong, they want to force the customers to get their car serviced. It's the same with CarPlay. CarPlay could easily be enhanced (where is this upgrade???) to provide access to everything in the vehicle without it costing very much but of course these car manufacturers don't want Apple to have anything to do with monitoring vehicles, primarily because they don't want Apple's products to show limitations and failures in the vehicles. I've seen custom-built EVs include way more features that monitor everything in the car, not just the few things ICE manufacturers want the customer to see so it can be done if they want to. Tesla displays everything about the car on a screen, why can't other manufacturers do the same thing? CarPlay is only one feature in a vehicle but car manufacturers are stuck in the Henry Ford era where everything is built the same way with no additional features. -
How to get started using Apple Open Directory
Wow, a historical piece. I haven't seen anyone even mention Apple's Open Directory for more than two decades. Microsoft, in one of its many anti-competitive practices, more or less forced all US government and corporate entities to use AD. Since the US government uses it they are never going to look at any Microsoft service, especially AD, as breaking any anti-trust laws. They'll go after Apple for providing very good products and services but never Microsoft. The courts slapped Microsoft's hands a tiny bit years ago but haven't done anything to them since. I ran a shop with OSX Services using Apple Directory but it was shut down when I left that organization and everything was a mess when converting to AD. -
Hands on: Everything new with CarPlay in iOS 18

Rivian adds Apple Music, but won't consider CarPlay
I have an Alpine deck in my 2013 Tacoma. It's very easy to change between CarPlay and the other car features the Alpine deck has configured. This deck doesn't control much of my Tacoma but there really isn't that much Toyota would even allow you to control. I can monitor my tires air pressure along with a few other things. If my Tacoma was an EV (not going to happen) I'd definitely want to have control of as much of the truck as possible and would insist on Toyota having a simple button/icon to go to CarPlay (that's also not going to happen). Sometimes you just have to evaluate the entire vehicle's capabilities before choosing what you want to buy. Of course, I could always add a secondary CarPlay deck (or build my own using an iPad or use a dask kit from https://soundman.co/) and disable all of the infotainment features the vehicle has. We always have options.
