  • Samsung overtakes Apple to become world's leading smartphone vendor

Market share is not the whole story; to show an illegal monopoly, the DOJ will have to prove that Apple maintains that market share by coercion, market manipulation or price manipulation. If US consumers simply prefer iPhones by a 2 to 1 margin, that’s not illegal. The case, as filed, faces some real challenges.
This happens in every market and rarely anything happens. Ford sells more trucks than any other company. Has the DOJ looked into any market manipulation by Ford? What about all their, and GM’s, manipulation of the truth? Even Microsoft just got off with a hand slap while they continue to coerce and manipulate the PC market. The US government is the largest user of Microsoft products, forcing everyone to use their server products with expensive client licenses yet nothing from the DOJ.

  • Apple won't unlock India Prime Minister's election opponent's iPhone

Apple has not commented on the request to unlock the iPhone. The company does have a policy of providing law enforcement with certain information when subpoenaed, but it will never unlock iPhones.

I didn't think it was a matter of "won't unlock", but instead cannot unlock, same with Google Android. If not then both Apple and Google would have to comply with legal orders to unlock them. There's good reasons that both companies employ E2EE. With no key they can't be ordered to turn over whatever was locked by the user. But beware of cloud services with backups.
I agree. The only way Apple could unlock an iPhone would be to use one of those (should be illegal) products that hack iPhones, like the one from Israel that supposedly is in the hands of many US government three-letter agencies.

As for moving manufacturing out of China into India, I consider both countries to be suspicious. I'm sure you know India is the Mecca of hacking and spammer organizations.

  • Does Apple's platform need to be opened up?

Haven’t heard from Daniel in a long time but I’m fine with Apple being a closed platform.
There are plenty of other companies that are “closed.”  Costco is not “open” to the public, it’s a membership store just like Apple. You have to buy into both and get what they sell. I don’t go to Apple to buy a washer and drier and can only buy a few models of Apple products at Costco. Why isn’t Costco “open” enough so I can buy any Apple product?

Yes, my comment is stupid but so is all the garbage governments are spewing demanding Apple open up so they can abuse Apple’s products to meet their demands. Apple sells a product that does specific things, just like Costco sells specific things. Yes, you can play around with these items once you buy them but consumers only choice is what Costco is selling that day.

  • EU launches mass DMA violation probes against Apple, Google, and Meta

As the EU gets more and more insane with all these policies.  It makes it more and more harder for anyone NEW to get into the market.  It's just to costly
There is a massive antitrust case in the US with 15 states taking part. UK is demanding 6 years of free repairs and there is a legislative mess in the UK with consumers and app-developers demanding billions from Apple UK in cases that haven't been settled. India is demanding local production, and so you end up only being able to work with the communists in China - that happened to shut all factories causing major disruptions 2 years ago. Is it the entire world or Apple that is failing? Well.. could be the world, but that won't help.

We need some Realpolitik and for Apple to navigate the real world.
Communists? What term do you use for the EU? I see them as being an economic dictatorship over Europe. The biggest problem with all these lawsuits by the EU is that the EU is struggling to produce much of anything that people outside of the EU really want to buy. How many European companies are "owned" by China? How many goods are sold in the EU that are manufactured by China? Does the EU actually produce many products sold globally? It appears the only way for the EU to many money is to sue non-EU companies. Is the EU going to sue Apple when they substantially raise their prices for all their products? Maybe the USA needs to shut down access to American websites and products from the EU. Two can play this game and in the longterm it's the consumers that lose while politicians make tons of money.

  • The potential TikTok ban is being decided on by the wrong people

Why are we worried about China? The majority of products sold in the USA, well the world, are made in China and even conservative company owners (Walmart, Home Depot, Tesla, the list keeps going on) support the manufacturing of products in China. If we cut ties with China, there would be almost nothing on store shelves, except for local produce.

As for worrying about China's spying on USA computer systems, including citizens computers, this activity is done by every single country in the world against every other single country in the world. The USA spends a ton of money spying on other countries computer systems and networks. If you think I'm wrong, you're totally misinformed and have your head buried in the sand. What do you think the NSA's job is? Politicians need to admit this fact and stop blaming other country's products for doing exactly what American products do.

Social media is a Pandora’s box of unintended consequences. Enough of “influencers” please. More curated newspapers and less firehose of stupid people’s opinions is fine with me.
Sorry, but you need to stop blaming social media and giving newspapers any credit for telling the truth. Media of all kinds, including simple spoken words at "social" and un-social groupings have been lying, telling half-truths, etc., since the dawn of time. People are hesitant to actually tell the truth unless it serves them. As for influencers, I totally agree. They're the new-wave snake oil salesman of American history, trying to prop up a product they know stinks. Do I listen to influencers? Absolutely not. I do read technical articles, like those presented by Appleinsider (used to simply say AI but I can't anymore since AI means something totally different) but since I've been in this industry for 50 years, I have enough background to know which influencer/commenter is selling me garbage.
