  • Facebook pays users to sideload data-gathering VPN in apparent violation of Apple privacy ...

Well, the silver lining is now at least Facebook is paying the user to spy on them.  Every time before this they were spying and not giving any benefit to the person being spied on.  Amazing how little it costs to get some people to agree to let Facebook know everything about their life.

  • Apple promotes photography with 'Shot on iPhone' contest, but is ripping off photographers...

I'm not a professional photographer so my opinion is probably different...but the bragging rights alone of saying my photo won and was a national ad campaign would be all the thanks I needed.  The ultimate "my hobby is better than yours".  lol

  • Apple tried to use Qualcomm modems in the iPhone XS and iPhone XR, but was refused

This is such a joke. $7.50 sounds more than fair. The fees Apple charges to sell in the App Store now that's is just wrong.
    Whataboutism. Two different matters.

And, keep in mind, that's $7.50 for FRAND patents, on top of what Qualcomm charges for the chips. Thus, the double-dipping that the Federal Trade Commission is worried about in this particular action.
I don't follow how this idea of "double dipping" is illegal or punishable.  I pay a vehicle registration fee to drive my car on the roads.  I pay a roads tax via fuel, to operate that car I paid a fee to operate on a road, on a road.  I pay numerous other taxes and fees for road upkeep just to drive my car on safe roads.  No one has an issue with double dipping there.

I have a PS4 that I bought outright.  I bought complete games for it as well.  Guess what happens if I want to use any of the online features?  I have to pay a yearly PSN fee...to use the system I already own to play the game I already own using the internet I already pay for.

To me it seems there is double dipping everywhere in society.  If a company has a model that allows them to extract more fees, why is it all of a sudden wrong here?

I really hope this conflict can be resolved sooner rather than later if for no other reason that when it comes to iPhones, Qualcomm  chips are far superior to Intels.
So what Apple now got from their “diversification strategy”: commercial bans / legal issues with QualComm for $30 (already passed onto customers in $100...300 overpriced handsets), LTE/Cellular issues, to be solved with numerous undocumented stability iOS updates, no modem supplier diversification, and at least 1 year delay for 5G.
(which I hardly care about, but can be deadly harmful in a technology-push market where they struggle to differentiate themselves)
Using their extensive outsourcing experience with Intel & lagging MacBook cpu’s...
    NOT
Why am I willing to pay $100 to $300 more for an Apple handset?

    1. Privacy; Google makes most of its money from ads based on massive data mining. Google’s mines data from “free” services like Gmail, Chrome, Google Maps & Google Drive for ads.

    https://bgr.com/2016/02/11/why-facebook-and-google-mine-your-data-and-why-theres-nothing-you-can-do-to-stop-it/ ;

This making money off of people’s private information allows Google to give away Android to OEMs for free.
Result; cheaper Android phones based on the lack of privacy.
    - Apple does very little data mining. Outside of App Store searches and the News app, Apple does not mine user data and protects user privacy.
Apple needs to make its money another way.
Apple by contrast makes most of its money from hardware sales especially from the iPhone.
    https://www.fool.com/investing/2017/04/08/how-apple-inc-makes-most-of-its-money.aspx

Result; Apple needs to charge more for its hardware.

    2. Service and support; Apple has top notch customer service and tech support. Apple extends the life of its iOS devices with OS updates many more years compared with Android OEMs.
FWIW Google doesn't use GMail data for ad purposes. I don't think they use Google Drive data either but I'll research it for you unless you want to do so yourself  to support your own claims that they do. You're linking relatively old sources. There's been policy changes since.

If you don't really understand the whole Google ad thing and under the impression your personal data is for sale you should read this link. It should clarify things for you. It's not as onerous as some posters here would have you believe.

EDIT: No, Google Drive data is all encrypted and what those files contain is not mined for ads. The only danger to be aware of is who you are sharing files with. To control that look here:
    https://www.wired.com/insights/2012/04/google-drive-privacy/
Bottom line, and there is no way you can dispute this, is that Google got caught red-handed mining gmail and serving up ads from what it gleaned.  They did so only after they were caught and called out for it.  They said they would stop reading gmail and serving ads, they never said anything about no longer reading your email.

One wonders just how many shares Sculley has...

This is not Steve's Apple anymore and revolutionary innovation requires a visionary.
Think Tim or Ives are a visionary leader?

Apple desperately needs a 'Handsome Anthony'...

Yeah that’s exactly what I thought.   aside from the watch most Apple products make less and less of a wow.
and didn’t Ming-Chi Kuo say that Apple would be coming out with a Car soon.   He was right about China sales tanking.   The car better be a big hit.   Seems like they have been spending enough money on it for a long time.   Time for some ROI.
I love reading people who think that researching a product only provides and ROI if that final product ever hits the market in the form THEY are expecting.  Any individual or company that goes into an exploratory project with a singular goal is setting themselves up for failure.  You don't know what all is going on in that arena at Apple, so spare everyone the "it better be big" rhetoric.  What if an "apple car" never sees the light of day, but during the research there are dozens of other projects for automotive or travel convenience that are discovered and created?  Armchair CEO's would I guess just sit back and say "nope, no car so they wasted their money".
