  • Future iPhones might collect fingerprints, photos of thieves

Apple has boasted that the iPhone cannot record fingerprints and the sensor only provides a generic code used to find a match.  Seems to me the Apple device would need the ability to capture a real fingerprint for this security measure to work which could be a privacy issue for many.

  • Why Alphabet's Nest doesn't (and probably won't ever) support Apple's HomeKit

I agree that this totally stinks. I have a Nest, and I do like it. But I really resent the fact that I'll never be able to use it with the rest of the Homekit ecosystem.

This is the worst example of tribalism that leads to a crappy experience all around. I also got some smart light bulbs for christmas, and they too are not homekit enabled. I don't want to be ungrateful, I appreciate receiving a gift. But it just sucks hard that my "smart" home devices are not integrated with my smartphone platform of choice: iPhone.
Tribalism?  It was Apple that chose to make HomeKit a nonstandard, proprietary protocol for the purpose of locking people into iOS.

  • US Army's Special Operations switching tactical kit from Android to iPhone - report

Surprised that the military are using consumer grade kit at all. I'd have expected them to be using less capable but more reliable custom hardware.
The DoD has been moving away from custom hardware/software and towards commercial solutions for at least the past 15 years.  It's probably still cheaper for them to buy double or triple the number of iPhones/iPads as spares to cover more frequent damage then designing some custom device that costs 10x the price.

  • Open casting call begins for first original Apple TV series 'Planet of the Apps'

Beyond acknowledging the bad potential title let's look at original content. I think original content is the next big thing for Apple. I hope they focus on 3 segments of this. Movies, Series and user. The younger generations are not even watching the new TV content from the large providers. They are watching user content, making their own content and love to watch old series from years past. I grew up in a world where you couldn't wait for the "new" season of something. That doesn't much matter anymore to the younger crowd.
I don't know, with Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, HBO, and others recently coming out with some industry changing creative original content it's going to be hard for Apple to come out with something even more different without looking like a "me too" operation.  I think Apple should branch out into some new industries but TV programming doesn't seem ripe for Apple to make its mark.

  • Two-thirds of US iPhone owners have a 2+ year old device, are prime for upgrades

My iPhone 6+ will be turning 2 but I will hold out for the 2017 iPhone. This year's iPhone might be a nice upgrade but I don't anticipate anything being a must-have to the point its worth 850$. Smartphones are maturing much like the PC market did years ago, its most an evolutionary process except every 5-6 years.

I don't need a new iPhone. My 5s works just fine, does everything I need or want.
I agree, my iPhone 6 is turning 2 years old. I have upgraded at least every 2 years since the first iPhone in 2007.  This is the first time I'm considering keeping my current phone past its contract end date.  Apple needs to take some risks and be a bit more aggressive vs play it safe with incremental changes.
