  • How to share a Wi-Fi QR code in iOS 18 to help your guests

For years, I have used the free online QR-Code-Generator to create QR codes that I printed to allow guests at my home or rental properties to connect to Wi-Fi (which, as was mentioned by others here, works for both Apple and Android devices). Of course, if the other person had an iPhone and is with me and is in my contacts, we just need to hold our phones near each other to transfer the Wi-Fi connection info.

Recently, I had some visitors ask to connect and when I mentioned the QR code, the person with an Android assumed I would show the code on my iPhone, but I pointed to the printed QR code on the desk. He connected but then showed me how he can bring up the QR code for his connected Wi-Fi on his phone, which then allowed him to share the Wi-Fi info with anyone else quite easily...

I thought that was pretty cool and that it was one of those Android only features, but a few days later, I happened to stumble across the same feature as described in this article on my recently updated to iOS 18 iPhone. So yay!

My next thought was that this password sharing via QR code is almost too easy...

  • M4 Mac mini vs M2 Mac mini compared: Leaner and meaner

    tht said:
I was hoping the height would stay under 1.75" for 1RU rack mounting. At 5" wide, I'd be able to get three in a row on a 1RU rack shelf, but now I'd need 2RU, wasting a fair amount of space...

I wonder if they can be mounted sideways, so up to 8 would fit in 3RU. (Obviously rack would have to have proper air circulation). That would be a lot of horsepower and a lot more I/O in less rack space than the 5RU Mac Pro!
Hoping that Apple offers a M4 Max system in a PCIe card that goes into the Mac Pro for a total of 6 in a Mac Pro plus the builtin Ultra SoC. And, you can mix and match I/O and SSD PCIe cards for such a system. They would just be networked together through Ethernet over PCIe.

Part of this is that Apple will have to drop the Mac Pro in price to something like 3K with a binned Ultra or a full M4 Max.

Just strange that Apple doesn't offer a more optimized Apple Silicon server or rack mount system.
I don't think we'll see optimizations for servers any time soon, but a somewhat lower powered mini powered by PoE++ or UPoE might be an interesting solution for server/rack applications.

  • A smaller Mac mini brings big problems for server farms and accessory makers

I made this same comment in the other article, but elaborated just a bit here...

If they can be mounted sideways, up to 8 could fit in 3RU (5.25" high), keeping in mind that there is usually only 17" of width available for equipment in nominal 19" racks. (Obviously rack would have to have proper air circulation). Even if a 1RU fan tray were mounted above each 3RU row of minis, that would be a lot of horsepower and a lot more I/O in less rack space than the 5RU Mac Pro!

  • Exclusive: every iPhone 16 & iPhone 16 Pro camera spec & Capture Button detail revealed

This just isn’t enough for me to upgrade from my 15 pro max. I’m getting tired of the incremental updates, they need a revolution and innovation.
Incremental phone upgrades are pretty much the name of the game these days, so might as well get used to it. I read somewhere that most people hang onto their phones for at least two or three upgrade cycles like I do. I went from 4s to 6 to Xs to 13 pro, so every time I got a new phone, it was always a pretty noticeable improvement. (I was just about to go with the 15 pro, but I'm thinking I'll wait for the 16 pro now).
