  • Apple urges lawmakers to reject bill that would force it to allow side-loading

Thanks, but don't you agree that Apple's $0 charge for free apps needs to be subsidized by the charge for the bigger companies?

Apple charges all developers $99 a year to distribute their apps in the App Store, regardless of price. If a developer wants to make money by selling that app, then Apple should be able to charge a fee for each transaction made. Apple is completely entitled to determined what that fee is as long as the developer is aware of those fees when joining the developer program.

Believing that doesn’t preclude me from thinking Apple might be better off if they lowered those fees as an option to get rid of all these antitrust accusations.

Only the malcontents that infest tech blogs like AppleInsider would side-load, and they would deserve whatever they get. This is purely a case of the tail trying to wag the dog, a bunch of losers who want to force Apple to do something it doesn’t want to do when they could easily move to Android and side-load away to their heart's content as well as tweet settings till the cows come home. But no, they insist Apple be forced to be just like Android and hide behind the ‘choice’ false flag.

That’s a little harsh, don’t you think? As a programming hobbyist, there are things I write that I would like to be able to give to a few other people, but not “publish” on the App Store. There are more than just nefarious reasons for wanting something like side-loading.
You can already do that two different ways, with TestFlight and Xcode. Why do you want a third way?

Yep. Already knew those options… not the same thing as creating a full app and sending it to someone for them to use freely without restrictions. Both TestFlight and distributing Xcode projects have limitations and hurdles.

I’m all for side-loading, but at the same time, I’m not complaining about Apple not allowing it because I fully understand why they don’t allow it, and I accept it.

Having an opinion doesn’t make someone unreasonable. Just because you cannot fathom why someone might need a 3rd option, doesn’t mean they don’t have a legitimate reason for it.

    Agree with both comments above…

It’s a proprietary closed platform. Its growth and popularity in the mobile market were achieved by consumer choice, not some unfair competitive advantage they abused. As a bit of proof of that, Apple doesn’t even sell products on the low-end of the market, meaning their customers are more willing to pay more money for Apple’s products.

    Wanted to add…

I do think Apple should offer some kind of tiered developer account whereby a developer could pay more yearly to opt out of the App Store and be able to distribute/sell their own apps from their own site (Apps would still be reviewed by Apple before being signed.). I also think Apple could start lowering their fees, especially for subscription services. Those two things still let Apple stay in control but also squash a lot of these issues.

Bringing Xbox into the argument shows the supreme lack of intelligence on the topic. For the ones who have trouble doing basic logic, gaming consoles are specialized devices that are not designed for personal computing. Oh it has a web browser? Yeah well so does refrigerators nowadays.

Might as well pull in Sony and Nintendo also, and make the comparisons even more nonsensical.

Phones are personal computers. We can use our PCS and Macs without paying any sort of tax on software. So how is it acceptable for our phones that we already paid for the hardware, devs are still paying a 30% premium for software?

Yes Apple deserves to get paid for their work. And they have been handsomely. Nobody asked them to make iOS, that was their own choosing. Building out a app store pulling in health and gaming etc that's all their choice. So to cry blood for Apple and near sad situation that they need to charge 30% to developers is bongos thinking. You have to pay into Apple just to make software anyway and then you're paying out for every sale on top of it every single time. Yes there are certain scenarios in there where is not flat 30% but come on.

So for the love of all thats holy please stop bringing up the utterly ridiculous Xbox comparison...its very foolish and child-like.

Love mac hardware, apple otherwise are control freak narcissists that deserve the scrutiny.

A device being “specialized” should not factor into what it can and can’t do… iOS devices are completely proprietary devices and just as any other proprietary device, the maker of that device should be able to control it and develop it as they desire.

Comparing them to game consoles and set top boxes is completely valid in this regard. In all cases, there are restrictions on what a developer can and cannot create. This is called a closed development platform; developers are granted access by the proprietor and must and can only use API’s provided by the maker of that device.

Apple is much too successful - we need to stop it now! -- Microsoft

Microsoft is pretty pathetic, and Apple's privacy terms rankle Microsoft's nerves. Too bad Windows doesn't have the same privacy safeguards - with Windows attempting to force everything through Edge.

Microsoft runs their own closed ecosystem with XBox, so it's a lot of Microsoft calling the kettle black.

The real monopoly is in the enterprise software realm where Microsoft keeps boosting prices for their good enough software.

What really pisses off Microsoft is that they don't have access to Apple Silicon ARM processors, so Windows ARM will run faster on Apple hardware than on their OEMs - or indeed on their own surface machines.
Microsoft has a point here. In the 90s it was so successful it almost killed Apple. On the other hand, Steve Jobs resurrected Apple without having to stop Microsoft.
Worth noting Microsoft invested in Apple in the 90's. Apple may owe Microsoft to a degree.

Yeah. Not so much. Microsoft "invested" 150 million in Apple to end the QuickTime law suit. Microsoft made 1 billion on that investment when they they sold their stock a few years later. Also, given that Microsoft basically stole the Macintosh Toolbox API's to create a better Windows, Apple owes them nothing.
