  • Threads hasn't been alive for a day, and Twitter is already threatening to sue

    I mean ...

We're not really playing favorites here, guys. lol. That gold checkmark we have on Twitter costs us way more than I like.

The reasons we don't enable comments on our tips -- and haven't for years -- are entirely due to bandwidth. People naturally want to ask questions on them, and we don't have the manpower to have somebody go through them and answer. As you can see we clearly don't look at Facebook comments. There are not very many layers of abstraction here. There's like maybe three or four of us here that you could ever potentially get a response from, and we all do that as best-effort in our spare time. Right now me sitting here typing this is me typing this instead of working on a feature for the website.

That said, we are in the process of finding a community manager / social media person to help us because we understand that we have fumbled the ball a bit over the past few years. Our goal is to foster a healthy, mature, helpful, and inclusive community and we just haven't had the manpower. Maybe once our community manager is hired and on-boarded we will revisit allowing comments on articles with a more political slant, or on our tips when we know people won't just be sending questions into the void.

  • Meta's Instagram soft-launches Threads to take on Twitter

I see AppleInsider already has over 2,000 followers. Curious what you think of that?
    More please?

  • Plant-based marketing campaign uses Steve Jobs & faces potential conflict with Apple

    Hi.

Some comments have been removed from this thread. As per general practice, we get the root and the stem, so apologies to anybody who made reasonable posts addressing the original. I should also apologize to people who reported earlier that it took so long for somebody here to see them. We're working on that 👍
I was late to see the email notifications for those reported messages because I’m 12 hours shifted in time, having semi-retired to The Philippines.  Sometimes that time shift is advantageous as I catch the ones where it’s the middle of the night in the states.
We don't expect you to get everything all the time, you do a great service for us. Don't worry about it

  • Steam update brings new features & Mac hardware acceleration

You go into great detail describing the new note overlay windows, but only a brief mention of the acceleration Mac users can expect. Why even mention it in the title if you weren’t going to explain it with more detail? You do know that’s the reason most people on an Apple News site are going to click on the article, right?
"The technical work in this update makes it possible to enable hardware acceleration for the Mac & Linux versions of Steam, bringing them up to par with Windows. You should see snappier animations, scrolling and more responsive UI." This is for the Steam application, not games installed by Steam.
Exactly. The most popular way of getting games on a computer got a full UI refresh that brought the mac to parity with Windows in terms of the Application itself. This doesn't change the way any games run. It's just about the Application, which had languished on Apple platforms in a poor state for a very long time. These updates are extremely welcome.

Here are the full release notes if anybody is actually interested
