  • Google faces $9 billion in damages after ripping off Java in Android

And if you think Larry Ellison's Oracle suffered any loss because Google didn't pay a license fee to the previous owner...
    He didn't. And he doesn't.

He still has his Lotto ticket and might end up paying nothing at all for Sun, even after helping destroy Java thru his company's negligence.
While none of us know what's in the original Oracle/Sun agreement, typically the purchaser gets all the assets and the liabilities of a company they buy. So Sun's IP loss or potential loss transfers to the new owner of the property. Oracle stands (has standing) in place of Sun, in this case. This doesn't address the merits, but Oracle has the right to pursue redress.

I agree that it's unlikely that any loss would total $9 billion (but when they sit down at the table that's where the negotiations will start). About 25% of that will settle the case.

  • Apple buys iPhone and iPad digital magazine subscription service Texture

In a nod to Eddie's former co-worker, Scott Forestall, each Apple-produced show will be visually framed by an on-screen, perfectly rendered, exceptionally black, film-sprocket border, with each sprocket hole perfectly displayed with rounded corners the precise size of the square of 1000 argon molecules, or the mean crumb size of a Pepperidge Farm Sausalito Dark Chocolate Macadamia cookie.

  • Consumer Reports' dismissal of HomePod a familiar tale to Apple fans [u]

I understand that Consumer Reports' entire business model used to be predicated being a relevant, trustworthy, and objective evaluator of consumer products. That was a very lofty and admirable set of goals but they have not always been up to the task and have skewed off the path of objectivity many a time.
Back in the day, 1950s and 60s, Consumer Reports used to hire actual scientists and engineers, and they got paid pretty well. My older brother the physicist worked for them for several months while waiting until his Bell Labs position opened up. CR used to do rigorous testing and analysis. Now all that is an echo. Their car reliability survey is still the best in the auto world (and by orders of magnitude the largest), but most other things are not subject to the same level of analysis.

Okay I find this totally funny, My family also have a Gremlin and my sister and I beat the hell out of that car, patch it together with bondo due to all the rust and had a front end accident and just pulled the bumper out and that things never died, it just kept running.
I find it funny that anybody, much less CR, thought a car named Gremlin would be worry-free. It's like Lucas electrics (Prince of Darkness) light bulbs...the name tells you what to expect.

But it was the best that Kenosha could do at the time. When I used to drive past the plant there would be a sea of Gremlins awaiting gullible dealers to place an order.

  • iPhone X seen as 'strategic success' for Apple as 3D sensing cameras 2 years ahead of comp...

I still say the iPhone X is an IQ test. Are people stupid enough to pay $1k for something Apple makes for a little over $300. That is one hell of a markup.
If I had a Jeff Bezos $100 Billion I would not pay that much for a cell phone and I have no interest in any face recognition system.

Cannot for the life of me understand the BFD being made over an OLED screen. As to cameras, I have Leicas that smoke any cell phone snapshot camera.

Price Consciousness should be translated to rational, sentient being. In the end, your $1k does not buy you faster internet, better sound, better battery life or more storage capacity. It does get you a lighter wallet
The retail price of any object has almost no relationship to simply the cost of components, whether it's an iPhone or a loaf of bread or a novel.
