Samsung's Galaxy S8 facial recognition feature defeated with digital photo

I think I have got AirDrop to work just once. Last night I had to transfer a note from an iPad Air 2 and miraculously, my iPad Mini 2 showed up in AirDrop! I nearly fainted. I chose the Mini and the Air 2 said 'waiting'. I was optmistic. Sadly, it sat there 'waiting' until I cancelled the operation. 15 minutes of my life stolen. However, encouraged by just seeing the Mini 2, I retried. This time I got the notification on the Mini 2. Wow! I thought nothing could go wrong from here but then a message popped up: 'to complete this operation, you must download an App from the App Store'.
That would require an AppleID password which I didn't have to hand, so I gave up.
You may be wondering what I was trying to transfer. It was a link, simply copy/pasted into a note. Absolutely nothing else.
That, my friend, is the definition of half baked and if you look this issue up on Google you will see I am not alone and the only real potential solution is complete overkill: a restore.
Of course, exactly why I have to use the half baked AirDrop in the first place (which requires Bluetooth to be on, iCloud and users logged into AppleID etc) is a complete mystery. You can send a file by Bluetooth from a Mac to any other Bluetooth device with the right BT profile in seconds. Same with Android phones. Why can't iDevices do the same and why isn't AirDrop freaking bulletproof years after launch?
That my friend is the definition of half-baked!
Never heard of Universal Clipboard?

In possible last gasp for iPad mini, Apple increases capacity to 128GB for $399

Apple hates the iPad Mini. That is a fact. Why?
1. Margins suck. Really does. Shrinking the ipad does not make it cheaper to make
2. Don't sell enough units. So costs go up
3. It canibalizes iPhone Plus - this is the main reason. Apple does not want the Mini at $399 to canibalize iPhone Plus at $769. It just isn't good business
If sales of the Mini drop again this year, I will not be surprised if they just drop the Mini altogether.
Now look at next year. Apple will be releasing the iPhone X1 Plus. That will have a screen size over 6 inches. At that point the Mini is not needed at all.IMHO - pure speculation of course;1. Margin should be good as all the R&D, tooling etc. has been recouped long ago.2. If it was cheaper it might even encourage sales amongst those who might otherwise not consider an iPad.3. As I said above it might not impact sales of iPhone Plus as people buy the phone to make calls and the tablet can't make calls! In fact it's the other way around isn't it - iPhone Plus impacts sales of iPads.
Didn't Tim Cook himself say he's not worried about cannibalisation? In fact I find Apples attitude towards memory size hypocritical; hanging on far too long to 16GB to make the iPhone financially appealing while simultaneously strangling it and yet here they are increasing memory on the iPad to gouge the customer for more money when it's not actually required on an entry level device.

I would have thought keeping it as a cheap, entry level iPad would have worked. I don't agree with Sog35 above that it would cannibalise sales of iPhone Plus for the simple fact it doesn't make telephone calls!

Apple unlikely to develop an Echo-like standalone Siri speaker - report
jakeb said:This is essential for HomeKit. Otherwise you have to carry your iOS device to with you at all times to control lights, etc, and guests are unable to do things at all.
Control of a fixed devices requires a fixed control. You never want to have to go find your light switch. -
Bloomberg attacks Apple TV as failing to be "a groundbreaking, iPhone-caliber product"
asdasd said:If Apple copies the echo it won't be in the aTV. Because the echo needs to be in the middle of the room.
The only way to transform the living room is with an actual TV. Not a box.
The Echo Dot in my bedroom sits on a shelf to the right hand side of the bed in a corner.
And the minute you put anything inside a TV you render it obsolete in 12 months unless you replace the complete television which in my case means shelling out £3.5k for a TV instead of £179 for a box or to be more exact £79 for a Fire TV to replace my ATV.
