HomeKit has been desperate for a low cost hub for forever
If the mini pod is $100 I’ll have one
I personally think the Apple TV is too
expensive to buy if like me you just need it to use as a hub, and the iPad is very expensive and obviously not ideal for lots of reasons.

So many companies have had a go at this. No one is interested. Most people just don’t like to consume news / magazines this way.I thought it was real bizarre for Apple to throw their hat in this market without doing anything new

Compared: Microsoft's Surface Book 3 versus Apple's iPad Pro
As you quite fairly said these two aren’t really directly comparable.It comes down to what you do for a living and basically how much cash you have.
Some people would be able to do all their work on an iPad and iPad OS has no doubt ramped up those numbers.
But for me, and probably most people, would need an iPad and a laptop/desktop. Yeah I’d love to have a beautiful iPad. But I just can’t afford both a laptop and iPad right now.
