  • Coronavirus forces massive AAPL hit, Microsoft earnings warning

This isn’t looking good.  China has done a good job containing the virus (despite criticism) but it’s spread globally seems inevitable.

I’m particularly concerned about reports of patients having been cleared (after being infected) then having the virus being detected again later (and sick).  What’s happening?  Is the virus living on surfaces longer than expected and the persons coming in contact with it again?  That doesn’t seem likely.  Does the virus have the ability to go dormant in the body then have a resurgence?  This would mean 2 weeks of isolation isn’t good enough.  Also, all those temperature reading to determine if someone is infected doesn’t mean squat.
So you're buying into the Apocalypse? Are you reading the Book of Revelations? You know what, seventeen million people died in the U.S. during the 1918 Influenza epidemic and we're still here. And from all that I've read Covid-19 has a fatality index of 2.3% and like the Flu it kills mainly the elderly, infants, and those with compromised immune systems. Ebola is 90% and we haven't all died from it yet. COVID-19's mortality rate is less than SARS or MERS. The 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic killed an estimated 50 million people worldwide yet we don't even talk about it anymore. Why? Because of modern medicine. I simply don't buy the hype out there by survivalists, religious zealots, and the various hang-wringers writing furiously on their blogs. Interesting factoid, Costco sells a pallet of food that will provide nutrition for one year. The pallet costs $5K... and they are sold out. Costco sells a huge bucket of Mac-and-Cheese that has a shelf life of 20 years... but it's still in stock.

This is just me ranting so don't take it personally. Your post was handy.

  • Warren Buffet says he's finally using an Apple iPhone

I know quite a few people in my age group (70+) who still use flip phones. The funny thing is they are very proud of that fact. They are usually technology averse too, proudly proclaiming they do not have or use a computer, use email, etc. I've always interpreted this position as an expression of fear of technology rather than an aversion to it. These same people were most likely the ones whose VCR displays were flashing in the 1970s. Avoiding what you fear is not exactly the best way to wind your way through life.

The Oracle of Omaha has always said he doesn't invest in companies whose business he doesn't understand. I guess he finally understands Apple.

  • Remembering Steve Jobs on his 68th birthday

Jobs once said his adoptive father, Paul Jobs, instilled in him the importance of quality in everything one does. He told his son that whatever was made should not only be of high quality on the outside but on the inside as well, even though no one would see it. That's why the inside of Apple computers were as beautiful as the outside. The logic board, cabling, screws, layout, etc, had to be well designed and look good.

  • Apple Card statements can now be exported as OFX files

    Soli said:
I exported to OFX, but can't import the OFX file to Quicken.  Quicken tells me to connect with the financial institution.
    What about CSV?
Quicken does not read CSV data.  Neither does Mint. It's one of the reasons people were perturbed about CSV inclusion and not OFX.  Unfortunately, the OFX situation is only going to get more heated because neither Quicken nor Mint is accepting the data in OFX format.  I think GS, in an effort to quell the masses, rushed the OFX implementation without proper testing.  Either that, or some software glitch is monkeying up the works.  @michelle_eris is one of a growing number of users who are finding this out first hand.
Turns out Quicken only supports QFX, not OFX. People are understandably confused. So it's back to square one for Quicken users. I personally don't have a problem. I am a Quicken user and simply set up a manual Apple Card account and manually add transactions as they occur.
