  • Mac malware jumps more than 60% in three months, massive uptick in adware

I am a Malwarebytes Premium subscriber and it has never reported anything on my iMac. I take the usual precautions. I don’t let downloaded files launch automatically, I never click on ads claiming fantastic things, I pay no attention to warnings advising me to update Adobe Flash. I never respond to emails from companies, even ones I do business. Instead I go directly to that company’s website. Of course I also pay no attention to emails claiming my account needs verification, especially from “Apple”. I use 1Password. And so forth. It amazes me that people can be so trusting and gullible online.

  • Student sues Apple for $1 billion over false arrest linked to facial recognition tech

    I'm not getting it.
There’s nothing to “get”. Anybody can sue Apple for any reason with the expectation of getting some money out of it, frivolous or not. It would probably cost Apple more than one of its gunslinging lawyer’s salary to defend itself. So give the kid and his lawyer a few $K and be done with it. A friend of mine was on a jury in a case of personal injury. The defense was able to prove that the plaintiff lied through her teeth about her supposed injury. Several jury members wanted to give her some money anyway for her trouble. My friend said they gave her $2K just so they could get it over with instead of arguing about it.

  • Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak to talk rogue AI at Purdue on Apr. 17

Does he ever actually do something productive, or just seek the spotlight and talk?
To those of us in our late 60s now he is a tech God. In his day Woz’s engineering skills were way above the bar. His design of the original disk drive controller for the Apple ][ floppy disk drive is still an engineering marvel. When it was converted to a single IC that IC was called the IWM (Integrated Woz Machine). He was one of the engineers who developed and standardized how information was stored and retrieved from floppy disks, how disk sectors were established and how the data was encoded. His specialty was taking an existing design and making it work with fewer components, thereby reducing costs. He chose the 6502 processor for the Apple I because it was on sale at a swap meet. So yes, he’s now just an icon who gives speeches but I’d pay for a ticket to one of his presentations. My oldest son had the privilege of meeting him when he gave a talk at the University of Illinois in Champagne/Urbana. My son was working in Granger Engineering Library when Woz walked in.

  • Apple promises to pay Cupertino $9.7M for transport projects in exchange for delaying tax ...

To be honest cities spend a lot of money for fire and police protection, utilities, roads and infrastructure that support these large companies and their employees so suggesting they pay more isn’t necessarily a “shakedown”. And it looks like Cupertino and Apple have a working relationship strong enough to produce a win-win solution.

  • Lawsuit charges Apple with ignoring swelling Apple Watch batteries

Companies get sued every day. I get class action claim letters from stuff I bought years ago and had forgotten about. Suing is one thing. Getting a judgement is another thing all together. The plaintiffs will get a coupon and the lawyers will get a couple of $million. We’ll probably never hear about this lawsuit after today just like all the others that have been announced and disappear into the legal rain forest. I remember a lawsuit against Apple probably twenty years ago. It had something to do with OS 9 and I was part of the “class”. Know what I got eventually? A free copy of OS 9 on a CD. But since this involves Apple the tech media will try to hang it around Apple’s neck like a dead Albatross. They always do.
