  • Disgruntled HomePod owners say firmware update alters sound quality

    ...is Apple listening...?
listening to what?.. to a small group of random whiners... more nonsense.

Plenty of people said that the bass was overemphasized at launch and I'm guessing that's what got "fixed" to make it more neutral.
There is a definite change. Bass ( subwoofer ) sound is more musical and controlled now and not just low with the update. Mids are definitely more pronounced. I think there is a bit more volume to mids and vocals ( not in a bad way ). There is a change to make it sound more neutral and it will take some people a bit to get used too. I noticed it immediately and liked it.  B)

  • Samsung delays its Bixby-powered HomePod competitor into second half of 2018

Wonder if the same people who are saying Apple are too late to the game with the HomePod will be saying the same thing when Samsung eventually release this.
You know that Samsung already released two smart speakers right? The HK Invoke and the Allure. I'm not saying they are good but you can't say they are late.
Samsung bought Harman International in March of 2017. HK Invoke was released with Microsoft in October of 2017. I know this ( The acquisition date ) because I used to love HK stuff and when I heard Samsung was buying them I was saddened   :'(   So I kept up with it...

The Allure was announced in August of 2017... and Since this also isn't running Bixby I would say this is an HK collaboration that Samsung bought, but did not design..

  • Apple HomePod preorders outpaced all other smartspeakers, except Amazon Echo Dot

I would love more size options for HomePod. The Echo Dot is decent for the bathroom but I want something more powerful without being much bigger.
If you haven't seen the Homepod in person I think you will be surprised by how small it actually is. It could work for a bathroom if that is what you are looking for.
I asked a person in the Apple Store about this and they didn't recommend it for the bathroom as it could get the components inside wet from humidity/condensation. If course, if you have AppleCare+ on it then its only $39 to get a replacement should you need to use it.
Don't get me wrong I personally wouldn't put this in a bathroom, but in regard to size I think it could be used because of the small footprint. I should have explained that. I don't want someone thinking it's is ok for use during a shower, and destroy a 350.00 speaker..thanks for chiming in. Yikes..

"Relative humidity of operating environment should be  5% to 90% noncondensing (the amount of water vapor present in air expressed as a percentage of the amount needed for saturation at the same temperature), which means it isn’t waterproof. And it’s better not to use Apple HomePod when you are taking shower".

This is a quote from Apple's website that I got from a different site...

  • Reminder -- the iTunes ability to play to multiple speakers is not AirPlay 2, but is prett...

Never had any out of sync buffer delay mixing the follow:

-Direct audio attached to a Mac
-Airplay from the Mac to 3 Apple TVs (1 forth generation over HDMI, 2 second generation over analog out) attached to stereo receivers.
-Airplay from the Mac  to 2 iHome WS2s over wifi
-Airplay from the Mac to 4 iHome WS3 over wifi
-Airplay from the Mac to Raspberry PI attached to stereo receiver.

all the above at the same time and all are in sync via iTunes on a Mac.

If I want to my iPhone provide the audio source, I can use a combination Airfoil Satellite for Mac  (and stream to the Mac) and Airfoil for Mac  (which distributes the incoming audio to other speakers) and Airfoil remote for iOS ( to control individual volumes of those outputs).

I don't use the iPhone to drive the audio source so much as a remote for iTunes on the Mac because I don't like draining my iPhone's battery.
If I do end up buying a HomePod, I'm not sure I would utilize Airplay 2 much for that same reason.  The battery life.

I suspect you are right regarding poor battery life if using Airplay 2 from a phone. But I also don't think that is the primary expected use case for the HomePod. HomePod seems to be primarily designed to play Apple Music which it draws directly from Apple's servers, not from a local device. Of course, just because that is Apple's intention, it doesn't mean users won't use HomePod differently (and the lack of support for non-Apple Music sources certainly means local device support is more relevant than it needs to be).
I have been using airplay to the Homepod from my phone or Ipad while working from home. It's not nearly as hard on battery life as bluetooth streaming is. I can easily make it through my day air playing music from Applemusic or videos from youtube and still have plenty of battery left at the end of an 8 hour day. Example...today I didn't charge my iphone 8 plus last night..started my day with 47% I have been playing music almost non stop since 1pm est. After 3 hours my phone is @ 24%.

  • Apple said to be upgrading AirPods with 'Hey Siri' & better water resistance

Useless to me until they implement passive noise cancelling.  Every Apple headphone (not including Beats) has sounded horrible (weak bass and mids) because the earbuds don't properly seal.  Clear example of design over function.
There are actually some folks that these fit correctly. So this is merely your opinion, not a fact.  Personally If I could get them to fit correctly in both ears I would buy this immediately. The fit in my right ear is good, but my left ear canal is just a tad smaller so the fit and sound is as you stated. Also I think some folks like the fact that you can hear your surroundings as they use them while they walk around the city, or at work where they need to be aware of what is going on around them.

I personally have the Beats X because I like the fit ( because of what I described above )  but to say design over function is a bit of an overstatement in my opinion. They don't suit your needs, but millions of others are love them...
