  • EU to settle Apple Pay NFC probe after Apple's concessions

Apple should just. let it crash and burn.

And them make a detailed video campaign about how the EU is taking away users freedom to choose a platform that is closed and secure.
I really wish someone would survey this and plunk the truth on the table.

    I'll set out my stalk.

IMO, virtually no iOS user is remotely aware of the limitations Apple imposes on them.

They are unaware of the wallet/NFC limitations.

Unaware of the Web Kit restrictions.

Unaware of the App Store restrictions. Both in terms of content and actual stores.

    Unaware of the commissions.

Unaware of the harm that is being caused to them.

That is what 'closed and secure' means, does it not?

Now. Why not be up front on all this? Why not explain these impositions, simply and clearly, and ask consumers to sign off on them prior to purchase?

I think you will see a massive change of heart from these people and of course that's why Apple would never ever be up front about it and would rather comply with the EU stance. Even if signing off on the restrictions might conceivably get them off many an anti-trust hook.
For a fact, most iPhone users are very happy with their choice, don't have any issues of note, and frankly, don't fucking care about what you care about. Certainly, the EU is less concerned about security, than Apple is.

Still, thanks for another round of "EU 'splaining". Does anyone here have difficulty understanding why the EU is always on the "back foot" when it comes to competitive technology? Could it be that the EU is a shitty business and investment environment, more concerned about balance between EU states than actual competitiveness?

  • Apple plans slimmest iPhone 17 & MacBook Pro designs following iPad Pro success

I only carry my phone when I’m traveling, and it’s been a harrowing experience. The battery seems to drain so quickly (see: range anxiety) and I’m constantly having to manage it. What I’d love more than anything: keep the damn phones the same thickness—or make them slightly thicker—and give me solid 18-hours of life.
They'd need to be LOT thicker and a LOT heavier to give you 18 hours of non-stop usage.
    GOOD!

    I want that!

More battery life, sturdier phone, not seeing the downside here.

Hundreds of consumers will line up overnight for that...

It looks like the iPad calculator doesn’t support RPN (Reverse Polish Notation), a non-starter for me (PCalc does). Are there any settings for the iPad calculator that allow a switch to what is the “RPN Mode” in macOS? If not, there should be.
Realistically, the number of people who actually care about RPN is a very very tiny (but vocal) minority, so I'm not surprised it
And a lot of those same folks are still running vi/vim as their primary text editor on their latest Macs. Once you’re comfortable with a tool it becomes second nature so there is little motivation to change. It’s analogous to comparing the standard keyboard/typewriter layout that was originally designed to slow typists down to reduce mechanical jams vs the Dvorak keyboard that is based more on frequent letter combinations and reduced reach.

I use RPN calculators and emacs not vi, for whatever it’s worth. After you learn how to use it, RPN is faster and more efficient, but I suppose most people are never exposed to it and would not learn it on their own.
Modern version of classic HP RPN calculators...

One of the best things John Sculley ever did was firing Steve Jobs.

The worst thing Gil Amelio ever did was bringing him back.  NeXTSTEP was a good OS, and an excellent choice for the basis for a new Mac OS.  But the second thing Amelio should have done after buying NeXT was firing Steve Jobs again.

I know, right?  Jobs was very good at one thing:  Taking credit for other people's work.  One of the first things he did when he came back was taking the engineers' names out of the about boxes, removing credit from the people who actually wrote the software.  It was something that Apple had always done until then, something that Steve Wozniak wouldn't let him take away from the engineers.  He was an absolute psychopath, that's the part of his personality that lots of people seem to want to forget.  He should never have been allowed to run the company, if he was given any responsibility it should have been as a marketing personality, he could do a good keynote - mostly because that let him take credit he didn't deserve.

We're still suffering from bad Steve Jobs decisions.  Nobody but a psychopath would glue the batteries into a laptop or phone.

It's highly probable that Apple as a company and brand would have ceased to exist very soon after a second Steve Jobs firing.

I haven't a clue where you get your hatred for Steve Jobs, especially after he took on the role of temporary CEO in 1996, and you obviously have issues with Apple's current leadership. Says more about you than it does about Apple.

Perhaps you should start you own mobile phone company; I hear that MS is looking to reenter the market...
