  • Apple rumored to be testing macOS for M2 iPad Pro

The perennial rumor of a Mac/iPad hybrid keeps coming up because the MS Surface is such a sleek, efficient, dominating category killer.

Seriously. MacOS has to run intensive software on the Mac Pro, with multiple giant screens that ergonomically will not function injury-free as touch screens. Making that OS also work in a touch environment on an iPad is a recipe for widows-like bloatware that tries to do all things, but none very well.

It’s entirely possible someone in the bowels of the big round building is experimenting, but those experiments are unlikely to ever see the light of day.
    But I want my toaster-fridge! /s

But seriously, you're 1000% correct. No one ever uses an MS Surface without the keyboard/attachment because no one ever bothered to write tablet focused software for the thing. So it's just a ergo-nightmare laptop. Plus you get Windows! Hard pass.

Maybe I'm wrong and Apple will drop some weirdo mutant MacPad OS, but I doubt it.
I had a Surface Pro 4 and use it without keyboard for some tasks, like browsing, social media and watching streaming services. In those tasks the experience was identical to my iPad.  Stil, the iPad is a better tablet and iPad OS is better with a touch interface.  Things change when you add a keyboard / trackpad, and the Surface Pro jumps ahead with a better experience.  As a laptop, Windows is far better than iPad OS.  Both devices have their compromises.  Which one is better depends in the tasks you do.
The days of tablets being only tablets are done.  The future of these type of devices is a 2-in-1 device that can adapt between different UI paradigms (touch, KB, mouse, trackpad, stylus).  There is no going back.  In this context, to me, Win11 does a much better job than iPadOS at least for Pro workflows.  iPadOS is perfectly fine for the iPad 9 / iPad 10.

  • Apple isn't done with 2022 -- here's what's still coming

Apple mightn’t de done with 2022

But after last nights feeble attempts with “Dynamic Island” “I’m done with Apple.

I wasn’t impressed. I was even more gutted when I saw their price for a base model iphone 14 pro in the EU. €1339 for a base model when last years 13 Pro was €1079. So after 14 years of accepting your feeble increments every year and putting up with your price increases I’ve decided that I can but an S22U with Watch Pro 5 for less and probably get the buds thrown in too for not much more.

You’re ok if you’re in the US though. They haven’t increased their price.

This is the last straw Apple. With your zero innovation and greedy money grabbing prices.

    Goodbye and good riddance.
To be fair, it isn't Apple's fault that the value of the Euro has declined in relation to the US dollar.  Most countries outside of the USA saw prices increases because of this

  • Studio Display update 15.5 with webcam fix now available for beta testers

Seems a bit weird that it apparently uses a similar camera to the iPhones but the quality is so poor. Seems like they cheaped out on it and are trying to fix it in software, probably by applying the same algorithms that the iPhones use. Has anyone done a teardown to find if its the same sensor to the iPhone 13?
9to5mac has a great article on why the Studio Display's poor webcam quality is a hardware, not software, problem.  And by hardware problem, they don't mean the webcam is defective

  • iPad Air 5 benchmarks show identical performance to 11-inch iPad Pro

Curious. What is the point of buying the pro at this point?

I have a 1st gen iPad Pro. Still works flawlessly.

But thinking of getting the m1 version.

So what’s the difference between the latest Pro and Air?
    1.  Pro has double the base storage (128GB vs 64GB)
    2.  Pro has FaceID (personal preference of course)
    3.  Pro has TB4 USB-C vs USB-C 10Gps
    4.  Pro has quad-speakers
    5.  Pro has 120hz ProMotion screen (this one alone is worth $200 for a lot of users)
    6.  If you need more than 256GB storage and / or 8GB RAM then you have no choice but to go Pro

If you don't need more than 64GB of storage and the extra features then go iPad Air.  But if you decide you need to step up to the next storage tier, you're better off spending the extra money and going Pro.  Just my 2 cents.

  • Foldable 20-inch iPad-MacBook hybrid could rely on touchscreen keyboard

A 20” iPad at 4:3 aspect ratio would have screen dimensions of 16” x 12”.

If that device had a hinge, and a flexible screen, that allowed it to bend up to, say, a 100-110 degree inside angle, it could be bent into the shape of a laptop with a keyboard.  If the laptop portion were to have a 16:10 aspect ratio, that implies the hinge would fold the 16” side into a 12x 7.5” screen side and a 12x8.5” keyboard/trackpad side.  Presumably a Smart Cover, that connects to the device’s 12” side would fold back into a screen-supporting stand for the laptop mode.

    So, the device could be a completely flat iPad with a 20” 4:3 ratio display:  sqrt ( 16^2 + 12^2 ) = 20”

    Or bent into a MacBook with virtual keyboard/trackpad with a 14” 16:10 ratio display:  sqrt ( 12^2 + 7.5^2 ) = 14.15”

Would be better if those display sizes were reversed, but it is what it is.  There’s only so much display area to work with and the MacBook form factor needs to use some for a keyboard/trackpad.

Overall I’d judge this not to be a good compromise. People will want to use the entire display in laptop mode, so an attachable keyboard/trackpad cover on a non-bendable display seems a better option.  But this bendable option is at least potentially more doable versus a device where the screen needs to fold all the way over to a closed position.

Please, Apple, if you’re thinking of making a two-in-one iPad+Mac, just give us that device in a few sizes in the existing iPad form factor with attachable keyboard/trackpad covers.  I just want a single, high-quality, hard glass covered screen that can be both touchscreen iPad and Keyboard+mouse/trackpad Mac.

A critical part of any laptop is the keyboard.   Apple keeps forgetting that fact sacrificing the keyboard for other priorities (the thin & light butterfly).  Recently they recovered from that fiasco.  But it seems there is still a faction at Apple advocating against fully functional keyboards -- probably the ones who can't yet touch type.
If Apple is going down this path, here's a general idea what this may look like
