Apple admits third-party App Stores in Europe are inevitable
jimh2 said:Those using the 3rd party app stores for their products will quickly find out 99.99% of iPhone users will never venture over there to hand out the credit card and personal information to another company. They may well find out the $99 developer kit is no longer $99 for them or their is a per install licensing fee. The really do not know how good they have it now.You are thinking too much about dodgy app store companies that try to sell malware. Two examples to illustrate how trustworthy companies might set up app stores.Suppose that Microsoft is setting up its own iOS app store to distribute its own developed iOS apps (no 3rd party apps) and to get rid of the cumbersome Apple App store guidelines. Do you really think the existing users of MS-Office will stop using Ms-Office because Microsoft is distributing MS-Office via its own app store? And do you really think that Microsoft would abuse your credit card details? If my bank created its own app store, I would immediately use it. Because I don't like that much that Apple is storing my payment details, these details belong to me and my bank. Apple is a foreign company for me, the nearest Appe Store is 100 miles away and I have no personal relationship with any Apple employee, so in case of issues I might have a hard time. It is so much easier and trustworthy with my bank manager, who knows me personally, and who has his office just around the corner.

Spotify speaks out against Apple's 30% commission fee -- again
Calvin_Hobbes said:"As it turns out, Spotify is mostly not subject to Apple's 30% commission either. After the first year of a subscription, Apple's fees drop to 15%."
oh.
Well that seems more than fair.
And while we're on the topic of complaining: Hey Spotify how about paying an actual user interface designer to clean up the train wreck that is your interface no matter what you're trying to do??

Apple threatens to kill iMessage & FaceTime in UK if controversial law passes
scatz said:chelgrian said:darkvader said:I'm assuming they'd still work if you use a VPN to appear out of the country to Apple servers.I expect Signal would still just work, I can't imagine they'd go to any actual effort to break it, they'd just not "officially" support UK users.
While you may be able to do some workarounds the loss of critical mass and the fact you'd only be able to communicate with existing international users makes it not worth it.
Sadly I expect the current government in the UK thinks that Apple/Meta and Signal are bluffing, they aren't they are deadly serious and the UK is a small enough market they can that walk away from it. -
EU proposes breaking up Google over anti-competition concerns
jfabula1 said:Ah EU….sorry but Google is not EU company you can bully. Yes you can tax them the right way but ad is their business. If businesses are really hurting then dont advertise on their platform. Simple enough.

Logitech K380 keyboard for Mac review: Fun colors, great feel, and inexpensive
I bought a K380 18 months ago and I really like it. I have 3 office spaces and I take the keyboard with me in my backpack . One the features that are not mentioned in the article but that is important for me it the mechanical on/off switch, so it does not occasionally switches on, emitting spurious key strokes while it is in my backpack. The multi device is also important. I am frequently working with 2 machines simultaneously and I can use the keyboard for both at the same time (just needing to press one the selector switches).
