Not sure if it’s related to this article but I love the irony of workers insisting on remote working conditions. Why have an expensive remote worker in California when you can have a cheap remote worker in Argentina?

These #XXXToo self-entitlement initiatives are deliciously self-defeating.

I bought an M1 Air earlier this year (I used an older Mac but was mainly iPad) and even the setup depressed me. I was used to waving a new device over an old one to set it up, so the idea of creating a user login was just disappointing.

macOS needs to:
1) Transition to an App Store only distribution model, the current hybrid is an archaic, random mess. Has anyone thought why free apps aren’t on the App Store (hint: Trojan)
2) Lose the old local user in favour of an AppleIDs
3) Get Split View closer to iPad and support 3 tiled app windows for larger external displays + better mission control for external displays. NOT copy Windows' janky side-by-side view.

iPadOS needs to:
1) Sort out local storage management by offloading app docs & data to an automatic iCloud mirror (currently you can offload the app itself only).
2) Replace the regular hierarchical filesystem with a system-wide information tagging model accessible across apps.
3) Improve external monitor support aligned with macOS.

2-years made marketing sense for pro products but Apple is the new player in PC silicon so needs to respond and iterate quickly. M-series doesn’t need to be in lockstep with A-series, they could mix different generations of IP blocks to suit the device.

All this is irrelevant as real world performance is dictated by software optimisation. Apple needs thousands of engineers forking open source projects for dedicated macOS framework optimised software to provide alternative libraries to x86. At the moment the closed politics of open source is working against them as Intel shuts down non-x86 projects (see Embree-ARM) ensuring the foundations for Cinebench & Blender underperform on ASi.

Apple Music Voice + HomePod mini was a smart move. It should also help improve Siri. Now they just need an AppleTV sound bar with a pumped up GPU for gaming & some deals to deliver AAA games (OK & maybe Epic too) via Apple Arcade+
