  • Apple's Mac Pro efforts started well before the April 2017 announcement

This is a pretty content-free article. Also, stop throwing around the word “iconic”. Learn what it means and when it is relevant. This just-announced machine is not “iconic” in any way other than its self-caricaturing price.
It's based off the iconic Mac Pros of the past.

    The price is cheap.
I blocked that silly troll long ago. He hates everything, not even sure why he comes here, other than to express his displeasure with the world. LOL.

He's incorrect, of course. The new MP and it's uniquely circled grill is iconic -- immediately so.
After the translucent iMac came out, every accessory maker on the planet started putting their products
in candy-coloured translucent plastic cases. I guess we have a few years of bubble lattice to look forward to now.

  • The Apple Pro Display XDR brings 6K to the Mac for $4999

There was an audible groan in the room when they announced the $999 stand. Devs recognize a Pro display costs Pro money, but that much for a stand? Too much.
It has a VESA mount, so there are plenty of alternatives.
But that VESA mount is $200!!! Two hundred bucks for a magnet with bolt holes is egregious!

I don’t travel in the kind of circles that use monitors of this spec so I have no basis for a value comparison there. I have, however, recently researched high-quality arms, stands, and mounts, and consider Apple’s pricing of the stand and adapter insulting. It says Apple thinks I’m too stupid to know when I’m being ripped off.
Nope, it just says this isn't for you. You'll be fine with a third party monitor, you don't need a reference monitor.
I’m not talking about the monitor.  I’m talking about Apple’s continued practice of pricing accessories and upgrades so high as to be infuriating and a deterrent to acquiring core products. I just bought two high-end display mounts for around $400 each. I refuse to believe Apple’s stand is more than twice as good.

It’s like Apple’s computers. I love the latest MBP, but the cost to upgrade the RAM and storage to usable levels is so high it ruins my device lust and just makes me angry at Apple. I really wish they would rethink that strategy.
Then take your “Good Enough” attitude and GTFO.  Apple caters to a market with money. They put in marketable efficiencies that to the general public aren’t obvious. Thus the general public boohoos the premium pricing that in actuality is cheaper when ticking the same boxes of multiple other products slapped together in a hideous monstrosity.
The snobbery in that post is palpable.

It is not a “good enough attitude” to suggest that charging two to three times as much as other vendors for RAM is a cash grab. Apple is not doubling the value of the memory chips.

Come on. Apple is and has always been for the price insensitive. For those focused wholly on price there are garbage PC boxes.
Fair enough, and I expect to pay more for an Apple product than a generic alternative that lacks the conveniences and intangible benefits of Apple gear. The question, as always, is HOW MUCH more?

For a year or two it seemed like maybe Apple was reigning in the upgrade gouging. Now it seems like it’s worse than ever.

...does anyone actually like the industrial design...?
I'm not crazy about it, but maybe it is more about function than form in this case? Seems so for airflow on the tower, and then they tried to match it on the monitor. The monitor/stand are kind of hideous, IMO, but again, they look functionally pretty great. But, it's just going to sit under desks and tables anyway, so who cares how it looks (the tower, not the monitor). That's why the MP-cylinder was a bit of a joke to the pro crowd, as they don't care that it looks like artwork on top of the desk.
That was the gist of a conversation I had today about the appearance of the Mac Pro. It’s ugly, but who cares? Does it do the job?

People, including me, complain when Apple compromises performance for aesthetics, so despite not liking the appearance of the thing, I won’t hold its looks against it.

Apple’s description of how the lattice pattern works sounds compelling, but I’m having trouble getting past the way it looks. It’s a great machine and I really wanna love everything about it, but man, them holes is ugly.

Overall I’m generally impressed, though. I wish I could afford one!

  • New iPadOS lets you use a mouse to control your iPad and iPhone apps [u]

The part I’m most anxious to know is whether adding a mouse will allow me to edit text on an iPad the same way I do on a computer. The existing touch tools are a monumental pain in the ass for me. It takes me at least ten times as long to fix a typo on the iPad as it does on my Mac.
