  • Tile CEO 'welcomes' AirTag competition from Apple's 'runaway monopoly train'

    Meanwhile…

I don’t have any Tile products (or AirTags) but I would like to see someone do this same thing with a Tile and see what the results are.

  • Google fails to end 'private browsing' snooping lawsuit

Furthermore, Google also claimed that there is no expectation of privacy for anyone attempting to use any private browsing modes.
This has always been the case. Around the time Private Browsing Mode was introduced in Safari I remember reading somewhere that it didn’t hide your activity from websites or tracking, it only hid your activity on your computer. The example provided was something along the lines of, “if you are shopping for your spouse you can use PBM so they won’t accidentally see your what web pages you visited in your history”. Also, no history of the porn sites you visited.

I’m pretty sure even Apple doesn’t say that PBM hides all your activity on the web from everyone. How would that even be possible?

Edit: I searched apple.com for “private browsing mode” and found this:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT210337

“ Turn Private Browsing on or off on your iPad

When you use Private Browsing, you can visit websites without creating a search history in Safari.

Private Browsing protects your private information and blocks some websites from tracking your search behavior. Safari won't remember the pages you visit, your search history, or your AutoFill information.”

The only expectation of privacy is privacy from someone else using Safari (for example), under the same login, on the same computer. That’s it. I’m am no fan of Google, the only Google product I use is YouTube and that’s only occasionally, but I don’t think they’re particularly out of line with that particular quote.

  • Apple releases tvOS 14.4 with bug fixes

I hope they fixed the bug that didn’t auto update the software when I had chosen to have software update automatically.

I would like to see tvOS get updated to allow me to see HomeKit devices in a second home, like I can in the Home app on my other devices.

  • Why Thread is a game-changer for Apple's HomeKit

Still unconvinced there is any value whatsoever in home automation.

People who’ve bothered to dive into home automation:  What were the biggest problems solved for you? And were the solutions costly?
I have several HomeKit devices around the house. I wouldn’t really say I use them as solutions to a problem, though, more a convenience.

For instance, I have the outside garage lights and breezeway lights turn on when anyone in my house arrives home after dark. They all turn off 10 minutes later. It’s not really a problem coming home in the dark but it’s certainly nice to have the lights on and waiting for us.

I tend to wake up before my wife and have an automation which runs when I stop my alarm that turns on lights in our bedroom and bathroom so I can see enough to get ready but leave them dim enough not to bother her sleep. It also adjusts the thermostat on the main floor so it will be comfortable when I get down there.

I have more like that but that gives you an idea. As to cost, I suppose that’s relative. The light switches for the garage and breezeway ran about $60 each. I have 3 ecobee thermostats that I purchased through a promotion offered by our natural gas company for $40 each, I think they normally go for over $100 each.

A friend of mine set up an automation with his window sensor, thermostat and an outlet so in the summer, when he opens a window it will automatically turn off his A/C unit and turn on his whole house fan. Again, mostly a convenience factor.

  • HomePod mini delivery dates slipping rapidly, especially for Space Gray model

I liked the white one better. Shrug.
I expect a lot of people like white. I didn’t even consider it because it would tend get dingy over time.  A speaker will tend to stay in place catching dust.
For me it’s the opposite. I have a white and a space gray HomePod. The space gray one shows the dust much more than the white one does.
