  • Apple nixed Xnor.ai's involvement in Pentagon's Project Maven following acquisition

As noted by the report, running AI processes like image recognition on an iPhone instead of offsite -- a practice that edge-based computing enables -- could raise privacy concerns. Always the bastion of consumer security, Apple likely recognized the implications -- and optics -- of Xnor.ai's involvement in Project Maven and terminated the work before the press caught wind of the relationship.
The article is behind a paywall so I didn't read it but, what privacy concerns are raised if image recognition is performed on an iPhone rather than offsite? It seems like the opposite would be true, that running IR offsite would be more of a privacy concern. Am I missing something?

  • LG's new 8K TVs support AirPlay 2 and HomeKit

Unless you need to be spied on more, never hook a TV to the Internet unless maybe for firmware updates. (In which case, Airplay 2 and HomeKit support are irrelevant--just use an Apple TV.)
And why would that be any different than any of the external streaming devices???
Because it came out that TV manufacturers were using spy tech to track users of the set and selling the data.
Right. Are there people who don't think this is at least a little creepy?

  • Apple in negotiations to expand Apple TV+ with live sports, more movies

What I don’t get is all the launch shows are pretty much finishing up now with their first seasons. See already finished as it had less episodes. Almost nothing else started in between so it seems unless Apple has some surprise launches, they won’t have hardly any new content going up weekly soon.

I mean I’ve got it free with a new iPhone so it’s not costing me anything. It’s not expensive really once you have to pay but they really will need to get more content fast for it to be worth even the price they want at the moment.
Yes, the launch shows are finishing up. But since then 'Truth be Told', 'Hala' and 'Servant' rolled out. Just yesterday AppleInsider had this: Apple TV+ comedy series 'Mythic Quest: Raven's Banquet' debuts on Feb. 7. I think Apple said there will be new content added monthly.

Edit: Apple's website confirms "New Apple Originals Every Month": https://www.apple.com/apple-tv-plus/

  • Linksys Aware uses mesh Wi-Fi network for motion-tracking in the home

I've been thinking of moving to a mesh system so I'm kinda happy to see some of these comments that it isn't all it's talked up to be. My old AirPorts are still working just fine, I just have some areas of the house that I get slower reception in. Not terrible, just slower. Maybe I'll hold off a little longer...

Unfortunately, I’m no longer using my Velop system. Can’t use HomePods in Stereo mode  with them when the Velop towers are assigned to different rooms and Home Sharing constantly has issues. Anyone else have a mesh system but have issues with inconsistent Apple product connections?
My friend got it but had issues. The speeds on the second story were considerably slower than the first story. When he brought the upstairs node downstairs to try to troubleshoot he couldn't get it to be recognized by the Linksys management app whatsoever. He gave up, returned it, and is trying Eero.
I know a lot of people here don't care for Eero now that Amazon bought them—and quite frankly I wish I could end my need for Amazon after Bezos turned out to a turd of a human being—but I've had excellent experiences with them for years that I have no problem recommending them as a solid options.
You can do it! I used to use Amazon all the time but since getting that bad taste in my mouth about some of their actions I slowly moved away from them and rarely even go to the website anymore. When I do it's typically just as an informational jaunt. Clearly, your needs could differ from mine (and likely do) but I feel like you could at least reduce, if not eliminate, your dependence on them with not much effort or pain. If 2-day shipping is something you care about, it's not hard to find other outlets that offer 2-day shipping. Granted, it may not be on everything but I rarely, if ever, find myself paying for shipping on anything (also, always been confused on how the shipping is "free" when Prime is not free).

  • Review: The Apple Watch Series 5 leaves the competition in the dust

I am a bit confused here. Everyone is cheering for tth greatest watch ever. The text says that the battery holds for the whole day (I have seen 18 hours somewhere in a spec), and that it id the same as for series 4. Did series 4 half the battery time compared ti series 3? I have tve series 3 and I love it. But it will last about 40 hours (in the beginning almost 48). Is is only me not using the watch heavily or did the battery capacity go down with series 4? I believe that I use the watch in a ”normal” way. Or is it the lack of LTE in my device that makes it last so much longer?
The reason for the apparent discrepancy is the AW5's always-on screen. It's a nice feature, but it's not free in power usage terms. If you turn off that feature (and you can), the AW5 battery runtime goes up to over 30 hours. This would be the proper comparison to the AW4. Of course that also varies widely with feature usage. Plenty of AW4 users have reported only needing to charge every second day, while heavy users may need a top-up during the day. It's a typical YMMV thing.
I haven't tried turning the always-on screen off yet but I see a noticeable hit to battery. I put my AW5 on this morning at about 6:25. Now, less than four hours later and I'm down to 84%. I haven't done anything with the watch so far today except issue about 5 Siri requests and occasionally glance at the time. Last night, after a full day including an 1-hour workout my Watch was under 20%. That was fairly uncommon with my Series 3 or Series 4 so I think the always-on is the deciding factor here. That said, I'm not complaining. So far I have gotten all-day battery life and I don't require any more than what I've been getting.

Aside: the headline says "leaves the competition in the dust" but I didn't see anything in the article about Apple Watch competitors, unless I missed something. I was hoping to see something as I typically don't follow competitor's products but it's handy to be able to provide an answer when someone asks why they should get an Apple Watch over what they happen to be currently using.
