  • Wish list: 9 new CarPlay features for iOS 12

i continue to have intermittent connectivity problems with CarPlay in my A4. Most of the time it works perfectly, but not infrequently I’ll plug my phone in and the CarPlay screen will come up, but audio plays over the iPhone speaker rather than the car speaker. Apple blames Audi and Audi blames Apple and I’m just annoyed
Interesting. My E300 does something similar but only occasionally and at startup. Music will appear to be playing but there is no sound whatsoever. I’ve found that if I invoke Siri and just ask for the time (because it’s a quick response) that music will play directly after Siri’s reply.

  • Apple urges users to send money to friends with Apple Pay Cash, upgrade to iOS 11.2

My wife and I tried sending money to each other via ApplePay Cash. It worked as easy as could be. However, the only thing we could do was deposit to our banks because when we tried to use it at the usual places we pay with Apple Pay, the transactions were declined every time. I contacted Apple and walked through all their steps, and nothing they suggested remedied the problem.
Interesting. Have you tried again recently or have you sort of given up trying for now?

I was minorly annoyed when sending cash to someone is Apple Pay Cash that it was first drawing the money out of the Apple Pay Cash card and then paying the balance with my debit card. I wanted to keep the balance I had on the Apple Pay Cash cards and only use debit but that didn’t appear to be an option. So it drew the APC card down to 0 and then took from my debit.

  • Consumer Reports' dismissal of HomePod a familiar tale to Apple fans [u]

Consumer Reports might not sell advertising space, but they know to sell magazines all they have to do is trash Apple.
And I suppose it’s possible that, even though they don’t take advertising dollars, they accept money which can skew their review positively or negatively.

I gave up on CR years ago when I noticed that their “CR Best Value” tag (or whatever it says) was always simply the cheapest of what was being reviewed, even if its scores were bad.

It also used to bug me when they would rank the ‘value’ of a Mac lower (due to its higher cost compared to the PCs in the review) but disregard all the software that was included with the purchase of a Mac and that worked well together (iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie, iDVD, iWeb, etc). Finding feature equivalent on the PC side turned out to be several hundreds of dollars and they usually didn’t integrate well.

    Meh.

In many cases there’s little point in having a watch app if your phone has to be in your pocket to make the watch app work.
That's not the case of the new LTE watch, but maybe they don't want to spend to many wholly independent, one app is enough work :-).
Trouble with the LTE watch is the carriers make it pretty unattractive price wise, if the carry it at all

Apple needs its own network. (That is a suggestion: I’m not saying Apple will implode if it doesn’t deliver what I’m asking for by the middle of next week).
LTE watch is lame. It's great on paper but in the real life, it's rarely used. I don't see much beneficial for $10/mo. As long as AW is connected to a WiFi, it can receive any notifications, text, phone calls from the remote connected iPhone. I thought they have to be on the same WiFi for it to push, but I was wrong. I forgot my AW at home, and my wife complained because many phone calls I received at work, also happened on my AW at home.
Yeah I don't find the value add worth $120 a year. Not using at this time on my AW3.
The thing I like about LTE on Series 3 is it doesn’t have to cost $120 a year. Similar to LTE on an iPad, the service can be turned on and off as needed (on a monthly basis). So if I only want LTE in the summer, when I’m outside more and more likely to want to leave my iPhone behind, I turn it on and then turn it off and no longer pay when I’m done.

For instance, we do a lot of boating in the summer and one of us always brings a phone. With Series 3 I don’t need to worry about where my phone is on the boat, if it’s getting wet or potentially going overboard. I can just take my Watch and still have the ability to call and text for just $10 a month.  I like having that flexibility.

 Watch is a fantastic little piece of tech and will obviously only get better with each new release, but it’s general usefulness beyond Apple’s ecosystem, for me, has yet to materialize.
I agree. At first I frequently found I would just pull out my phone because the Watch was so slow. Now that I have a Series 3 I wish I could try some of those discontinued apps again, just to see if the experience is better with speed.

But, to me, apps for Amazon and Target just don’t make much sense. I could see the eBay one being handy for bidding, but if it was slow forget it.

One thing I love and I think people forget or don’t even know about is using the camera app to see a preview from the iPhone camera and then trigger the shutter. So great, especially when using a tripod.
