  • iPhone unlocking firm Grayshift faces extortion demands after data breach

This article sounds more like click-bait dramatics than actually damage.  Sounds like the box has a built-in web server and all a user has to do is communicate via a browser instead of having to install some kind of software on their computers.

This is not even anything remotely close to having access to the actual code which makes this hardware work unless the actually code is a bunch of php, java, javascript, etc.. which to me would just not make sense.

There is way more to this story that is not being discussed, and I'm beginning to think it's another one of the media's "Let's be the first to post, and retract later" antics.  I'm a software engineer and there's just too many holes in this story to come to any kind of conclusion just yet.
You're right. It's a bit like taking the HTML code from Apple's homepage and demanding a ransom. Seems like they have nothing that an average developer couldn't have thrown together in an afternoon.

  • European Commission opens 'in-depth' investigation into Apple's acquisition of Shazam

If they approve the acquisition but force Apple to continue offering links to the competition, surely they have to do the same to Google. Right now, Now can listen and identify songs but will only offer to open it on Google Music. It's slightly frustrating on those few times I need it. I could use Shazam but the slight convenience of having it in the OS puts me off installing it to use once in a while.

  • Watch: iPhone X vs. Galaxy S9 Plus battery life compared

The conclusions here are mildly interesting,  but the vastly larger size of the battery in the Samsung (nearly a third more capacity) is not counterweighted against the iPhone X, making most of these tests inherently unfair.

It would have made much more sense to compare the iPhone X to the Galaxy S9, and the iPhone 8+ to the Galaxy S9+, with a simple side note saying something along the lines of “comparing the iPhone X to the Galaxy S9+ directly would give the S9+ an advantage due to its much larger battery, which is not really canceled out by it’s larger display.”

I don’t think we needed a set of exhaustive tests to tell us that a much larger phone with a much larger battery is likely to do better than a smaller phone with a smaller battery. Duh.
The X has a bigger screen than the 8+ doesn't it? Why would you compare the smaller Samsung to the bigger iPhone and vice versa? It's flagship vs flagship
First; in terms of total usable screen area, the iPhone 8+ is about = to the iPhone X.

Second; Flagship isn’t the most important label. High end is.
The iPhone X, 8 & 8+ are all high end phones.
They all cost more than $500.

    They certainly aren’t midrange phones.

    * It is definitely appropriate to compare the 8+ with the S9.

So you think this series on S9+ vs X should in fact be S9+ vs 8 because why? Personally, I'd rather see a comparison between the two best phones on the market not two random phones >$500 that have comparable battery capacities.

  • Apple iOS App Store is trouncing Google Play in services, subscriptions

but both Google and Android enthusiasts note that shopping outside of Google Play is exceptionally dangerous due to the malware and spyware that satiates open software markets.
This is a bit like saying walking outside is dangerous. Yes, it can be, if you have must or choose to frequent dangerous areas. But the vast majority of people buying outside of the play store (in the US, as this data looks at) are giving their money to established companies like Spotify and Netflix on a desktop.

DED, it would be interesting to see an unbiased look at the two different business models. Rather than saying Google fails at being Apple, why not look at what it is actually trying to do. Its goal is to get many devices into hands and make money from advertising in apps rather than clip the ticket on app purchases. The world is better if we have competing business models.
So no, Gools has not just been focused on mobile ads. And it hasn’t even performed well in mobile ads.

Hasn't performed well in mobile ads? It's the global leader in mobile ads and it makes up the bulk of its revenue.

In mobile, people do not search Google so much. They go use dedicated apps. And nobody playing a game cares about banner ads. There’s little real value in in app ads.

No value in in-app ads? Youtube? Maps? Gmail? Chrome? Waze? You know, five of the most popular apps on the iPhone. This is where Google is making tens of billions of dollars.
