  • Apple iOS App Store is trouncing Google Play in services, subscriptions

but both Google and Android enthusiasts note that shopping outside of Google Play is exceptionally dangerous due to the malware and spyware that satiates open software markets.
This is a bit like saying walking outside is dangerous. Yes, it can be, if you have must or choose to frequent dangerous areas. But the vast majority of people buying outside of the play store (in the US, as this data looks at) are giving their money to established companies like Spotify and Netflix on a desktop.

DED, it would be interesting to see an unbiased look at the two different business models. Rather than saying Google fails at being Apple, why not look at what it is actually trying to do. Its goal is to get many devices into hands and make money from advertising in apps rather than clip the ticket on app purchases. The world is better if we have competing business models.

  • Apple grabs 86% of global smartphone profits, iPhone X alone seizes 35%

"Apple grabs 86% of smartphone profits globally" I think that would depend of how you define "smartphone profits". Samsung makes billions of dollars off of their component sales to produce/build millions of phones. Even those that they don't personally sell. Every time Apple sells a phone... Samsung makes profit. Maybe you should change the headline to read "...retail profits on smartphone sales globally."?? Just a suggestion.
I believe that when Samsung sells a phone, it books part of the profit in the handset division and part in the component division. That means a huge chunk of profit is being missed by these research firms that are essentially penalising Samsung for being vertically integrated. But these details don't make for snappy headlines so they're usually ignored.

  • Watch: iPhone X vs. Galaxy S9 Plus battery life compared

The conclusions here are mildly interesting,  but the vastly larger size of the battery in the Samsung (nearly a third more capacity) is not counterweighted against the iPhone X, making most of these tests inherently unfair.

It would have made much more sense to compare the iPhone X to the Galaxy S9, and the iPhone 8+ to the Galaxy S9+, with a simple side note saying something along the lines of “comparing the iPhone X to the Galaxy S9+ directly would give the S9+ an advantage due to its much larger battery, which is not really canceled out by it’s larger display.”

I don’t think we needed a set of exhaustive tests to tell us that a much larger phone with a much larger battery is likely to do better than a smaller phone with a smaller battery. Duh.
The X has a bigger screen than the 8+ doesn't it? Why would you compare the smaller Samsung to the bigger iPhone and vice versa? It's flagship vs flagship

  • Samsung's Galaxy S9 phones inch out iPhone X for top Consumer Reports ranking

Did they not turn on the phones?  If they had they would have clearly seen that the Samsung phone runs Android.  That’s a Bill Paxton “Game over, man” moment right there, no need to test further.
Have you used any Android phones recently? There's very little difference between iOS and Android. I've tried going from Android to iOS and found it difficult because of habit but I can see fairly clearly that they are very similar. Each has a few minor advantages and I get that you might personally lean one way or the other but "game over" seems a little fanboish.

  • Pedestrian killed by Uber self-driving car, testing stops in all cities

The thing that concerns me most about this is that there doesn’t seem to be a mention about who’s responsible for her death. Just because it was a computer driving doesn’t mean someone isn’t responsible, and in this case those responsible are the people who developed the product. The car didn’t create itself...it’s errors are due to the errors of its creators.

If companies developing these cars were actually responsible for people’s deaths like they should be we would undoubtedly end up with considerably safer autonomous cars.
I guess we're about to find out the answer to this. They'll need to start by deciding if the pedestrian was at fault or not - if she stepped out in front of the car, in a 45mph zone, in low light and not on a cross walk, I suspect that Uber won't be held to account. If she stepped out with some distance between her and the car and the Uber didn't even slow down, then there will be a line of lawyers offering their services to the family.
