  • Microsoft victorious over FTC lawsuit to block Activision Blizzard buy

Microsoft is flushing $69 billion dollars, buying a nebulous game content company, if they were buying Unreal Engine, or Unity, that would be worthwhile, particularly Unreal Engine, buying a hollow game company were the actual talent isn’t tied to the company and usually hired on a per game basis and then let go at the end of a project, all Microsoft is getting in the end is just the game titles, but the talent is free to go anywhere to work that isn’t a good deal, the federal government unintentionally was saving Microsoft from itself.

That $69 billion acquisition is probably more than what Apple has spent in its entire history on mergers and acquisitions. In fact, it probably is three times maybe four times more. And most of the talent can just fly away because that is the nature of game development, once a particular project is over usually you’re gone.

When your competition is about to make a big mistake let them, smile and congratulate them, Tim Cook is probably smiling…… :)
Activision / Blizzard owns major titles like CoD, Diablo, Overwatch, World Of Warcraft and Candy Crush, so I don't think they are a "nebulous game content company", as you said.  Talent may come and go, and from what I have seen it's normal in this industry.  The point is that, if the deal is done, MS will have some big games as part of their studios, and that's exactly what they need for GamePass.  Now we'll have to wait and see how customers react and if the investment works out.

And I don't see why Tim Cook should be smiling.  Apple is neither a game developer or publisher, and neither are in console or gaming PC market.  At the same time, Microsoft now is entering the mobile gaming market with big names, King and CoD:Mobile.  Maybe the ones smiling are Satya and Phil.  We will know in the next few years how all of this goes.

Fixed it for you sounds like Google’s Ad business is the one that’s going to get hit over the head if it does search well.
Remember that MS will use Open AI technology in their browser, Windows and MS Office.  We'll have to wait how it works, but if they succeed, they could be a threat to Apple software too.
I doubt it if it works and provides accurate search. Google ad empire is the number one target and most affected, nice try however with the false Apple equivalence, but even without AI everyone knows to look on page two for what you really are searching for with Google. That’s been true with Google search for years.
I didn't try to make an equivalence. My point is that if MS does a good job extending AI to Windows and MS Office, could impact Apple too.  I while I agree that it may not have a large impact to Google Search, it could impact GCP and AWS, considering MS is also offering Open AI in Azure.

  • Apple considering 2025 debut of touchscreen MacBook Pro

I have a touch screen on my work HP f dragonfly. I don’t use it. For scrolling, and that is about it. And let’s be honest, touchscreens are probably offered because for some unfathomable reason windows trackpads are crap, and have always been crap, despite the mac example to copy.

if apple goes touch screen in 2025, it will be because the iPadisation of MacOS is complete; or it has become too hard to get a non touch OLED display.

Ironically, we are getting a thinkpad P14s workstation for engineering student daughter. It doesn’t have a touchscreen. And comparably priced to a very tricked out MBP. But I digress.

I have tried the trackpad in my customers ThinkPad P1 and Surface Laptops, and they are excellent.  Maybe they are not as good as an Apple trackpad, but they are very close.  Now, if we talk about keyboards, ThinkPad and Surface devices are far ahead of Apple.  I suppose there is no perfect device.

  • iPadOS 16 makes significant changes to how an iPad operates, but it isn't enough

The process of Apple making the iPad a better desktop have been slow and confusing.  For some reason, the have been adding elements like multitasking, and mouse / trackpad support in a limited way.  If a device as the Surface Pro X, with a slower processor, is capable of a full desktop experience, I suppose the iPad, at least could do the same with its more capable specs.

After having a Surface Pro 4 and iPad for years, I can say the iPad is a better tablet. But the Surface Pro is a better device when you work with a keyboard + trackpad / mouse.

  • EA reportedly tried to sell itself to Apple

Apple should do this. EA is huge with fantastic IPs.

That would provide Apple with tremendous leverage in the gaming scene and plug the only hole Macs have.

    Mass Effect
    F1
    Dragon Age
    Fifa
    Need for Speed
    Titanfall
    Battlefield
    Command and Conquer
    Dead Space
    Numerous Star Wars games

     Etc etc etc

    its a treasure trove.

The Bungie acquisition gave Microsoft the must-have it needed back when.

This would do that for Apple.

Apple Arcade is crap. Sorry. It’s a joke. It’s the same as not even trying. Just a way to get recurring payments from people who don’t buy games much. In the beginning, it was a way to focus on higher quality mobile games. But now it’s just a subscription tier for the same old crap.

Apple has the ecosystem, hardware, software, APIs,  and trusted brand to dominate the gaming industry.

Focus on M2 Pro based “Apple Arcade” console (or have a new Apple TV+Arcade higher tier device), Mac and iOS and then port the games to third party console and pc a few months later. Create movies and tv series with these IPs and feature them on Apple TV+. It’s a business that wouldn’t be denied. So much potential here.

I don't know if I could say that Apple has a ecosystem when they don't even have a controller.

Also, I don't think the M2 would do something in the gaming market.  The switch is evidence that you don't need the most powerful device to win in the gaming market.  If Apple decide to enter the gaming market, will it compete with Nintendo or MS / Sony?

And here is another issue, upgradability.  Will Apple allow gamers to upgrade their devices?  One of the things PC gamers value is upgradability, and Apple is terrible at this.

My point is that acquiring / merging with EA would be one of many things Apple need to do enter the gaming market.
