  • New folding iPad and refreshed iPad mini 7 now in 2024, says Kuo

    Nobody needs a folding iPad.
I have both a mini and a 12.9 iPad Pro and have less than no interest.
    Leave folding displays to Android

  • New HomePod vs 2018 HomePod - compared

Ordered two for use on my desk as speakers for my MBP when connected to the 32" 4k LG Display.
Retiring a set of Focal computer speakers XS 2.1 (USB connected) from way back (2009, maybe). They have served well and sound good but take up a lot of real estate, require a lot of cables and are long past being able to be repaired.

Using the Military/Veteran's discount that Apple offers you save 10% off list and then putting it on the Apple Card takes another 3% off, so not too bad.

  • Weak demand for MacBook, Apple Watch, AirPods may have caused order cuts

Apple's products are not selling as well for many reasons but part of it is they are often not class leading.

Just bought a pair of Bose Quiet Comfort 2 earbuds and the sound quality is so far beyond anything Apple offers and it is not in that hideous white plastic. Still have a pair of Beats Pro Fits that I use out on the bike and such, but the noise cancellation and sound quality of the Bose is far beyond anything Apple offers.

The new Apple Watch Ultra is less than impressive. While the battery life was impressive, recent SW updates have made the watch very quick to deplete the battery. The watch also has the occasional nasty habit of giving me the spinning wheel at random and the Apple Store was less than helpful.

Apple Music is a train wreck and the promised Classical Music app has failed to appear by the promised EOY 2022. iTunes was a far better app and experience. I have the full bundle of apps (just to get the good News app) but have to pay for stuff I do not want like the fitness, gaming and TV+. Looking at dropping the services bundle for better from 3rd parties.

Apple 14 Pro so far is meh. Not significantly better than the 13 Pro in any way. Apple needs better 5G antennas and radios - especially at the prices they charge.

Messages is at this late date, still far less than it should be. It still does not play well with non Apple devices and is also inconsistent in how it handles messages. Some messages that come through on the Phone do not on iOS or Watch OS devices. We cannot control what phones the people we need to message have and Apple needs to make a better and more consistent experience.

Sync of messages, mail and such across devices did not used to be a problem but has become one over the last year or so. Read messages on one device do not properly show that way on other devices. Same with CarPlay - messages seen or heard on CarPlay still show up as new or unread on other devices.

Some of this relates to services, but that is what ties this ecosystem together and Apple is falling behind and many do not have the high quality of year gone by. The SW and services are what differentiate Apple and they are dropping the ball and raising prices.

  • Man beaten, robbed of $95,000 worth of iPhones outside Apple Store

We live in strange times and criminals have become quite brazen in places all over the country. We are seeing people being targeted at high end stores, banks and restaurants, followed home and then robbed in broad daylight. Anyone not exercising discretion when handling a large purchase in Manhattan is really taking a large risk.

My first response to the story is “why would he just not have them shipped?”
It makes no sense to assume that kind of risk.

  • Apple Store crash victims sue Apple over '100% preventable' crash

It's going to come down to a few questions.

    1.  Did Apple own the building?

    2.  Did Apple own the parking lot?

    3.  Whoever owned the property did they follow local building codes and ordinances?

Ultimately like most lawsuits against companies of this scale and wealth everyone is hoping for a significant settlement for them but not matter to Apple.
Not the lawyer in the family (my Brother is) but if you operate a public facing store you are responsible in part even as a tenant. This is pretty well established in law.

I am not a fan of tort lawyers, but many Apple Stores already have bollards in front. Saddle Creek (Germantown/Memphis) has them as do other stores I have visited. With an all glass front it would seem that having bollards would be a natural risk mitigation. We live in a time when there are many risks to pedestrians, shoppers and others that never would have been imaginable not too long ago.

My guess is that Apple will settle out of court unless the demands are unreasonable. In a court they would lose on the facts of the case.
