  • FBI again asks Apple to unlock iPhones belonging to suspected shooter

This is an ongoing political effort by the FBI and law enforcement in general to wipe out any personal privacy you have with digital devices. It has persisted under both Democratic and Republican administrations and has been rightly opposed by citizens of all political persuasions.

The Supreme Court rightly said that the cell phone carries personal information and should require a warrant for even the most causal intrusion by a law enforcement officer. That 9-0 opinion was written by John Roberts, by the way. Everyone from Ruth Badger Ginsburg to Antonin Scalia agreed, which tells you how broad the concern for privacy is among the members of the court.

This is not about a particular case- it is about destroying your expectation of privacy. They want to be able to take your devices at border crossings, airports, train stations and other ports of entry just because they feel like it and do so every day. They want to inspect your phone at roadside stops without a warrant. They want a back door to peer into your device without your permission and routinely use Stingrays to spoof cell towers and scoop up wireless traffic over large areas.

This is not about a single case or your safety or left-right politics. It is about your basic rights to privacy and the right to not self-incriminate. It is an inch by inch intrusion into your civil liberties and individual rights.

    Can I get an Amen?

  • Swallowed AirPod sends 7-year-old to emergency room

I work in Medical Radiology and have for over 30 years.
The Doctor says it will pass, but I would have doubts unless there is known experience with the AirPod. If the literature says the AirPod will remain intact and not leak as it passes through, then it should be OK.

The lithium battery is highly toxic as would a watch battery. If I were the parent I would prefer that a GI doctor scope it out as it looks to be along the greater curvature of the stomach.

If it was a coin or marble it is no big deal. Battery or cluster of magnets is a different issue.

  • 2020 iPad Pro renders show triple-camera bump and glass back

I have owned and enjoyed the iPad Pro and really do not see the value or need for a glass back or a fancy camera.

It is a rare thing where I would be using my iPad Pro and not have the iPhone 11 Pro along, so exactly why would I want a duplicative camera set up on the iPad Pro? As to a glass back for wireless charging, I do just fine with USB C charging. The Anker charger sold in the Apple Store does a good job with both my iPad Pro and my MacBook Air.

My only complaints with the current Pro are battery life could be better and the clunky two button shutdown method.

I would love to see Apple completely switch over to USB C on iOS/iPad OS devices.

  • Apple Maps improvements conclude with push into Alaska, Central & Southeast US

Seems to be a work in progress where I live/drive.

It is not the dumpster fire it once was, but is still not the best for routing or avoiding construction or accidents along your route.

In case there is someone from Apple lurking, please  do look around for Zip Code 98281 - Pt Roberts, Wa. Google has never added street view.

  • Apple open-sources HomeKit Accessory Development Kit to spur adoption, grow new standard

Apple has made a lot of mistakes with HomeKit, starting with no Macintosh support from the very beginning and only partial support to this day. Tens of millions of Macs are sitting online at home and not one of them can be used as a hub for HomeKit. To ignore the huge bump that could have given HomeKit at launch just beggars belief.
