Apple doesn't care about market share. If they could make higher profits by doing it, Apple would be happy to sell just to the 1%. Apple is like Tiffany or Ferrari.
    Great point.
Ah so this is why Apple is still selling the gold Edition watch...oh wait....

  • Apple hits $1 trillion market cap, the first US company ever to hit milestone [u]

CNBC has the bears out today. Saying Apple is just a consumer electronics company and prices and margins always come down and will come down with Apple too. Also fretting over Apple being too dependent on iPhone and services growth all ties to iPhone. And complaining about all the cash the company has and not doing any large acquisitions with it. Now that the 1T milestone has been hit (even if it was intra-day only) the bears will be out in full force.

  • Apple not taking chances with ads, is too 'vanilla' says former ad director

Why do we always hear from former employees and contractors about how Apple is now failing under Cook? We already got Woz trashing the company from time to time. We got the “If Steve were alive” crowd pounding away, even though many of them called Jobs the supreme asshole of the universe when he was alive. We got the disgruntled headless Mac luddites clamoring for integrated optical disc drives and RS-232 ports (okay, overkill on the sarcasm but you get it). We got the notch haters, the keyboard haters, the bezel haters, we got the troll army in the trenches.

Yet Apple under Tim Cook keeps chugging along, keeps being profitable, keeps selling products most people like, keeps rewarding shareholders, keeps competitors nervous at all times (look no further than the recent Samsung “ads”).
He didn't say Apple was failing. He said they weren't taking chances. Although during the time he was involved, Apple was "beleaguered", so they had to.

I believe that his message is Apple isn't as hungry as they used to be, and they aren't.

Profits are more of a priority now.

Take it as a warning. Don't rest on your laurels or you can end up like, well Microsoft.
And many people here constantly point out this fact as if nothing matters so long as Apple makes the most profits. I had family in town the past week and several family members complained about their Apple devices. They complained about constant software changes and battery issues with iPhone. My 21 year old nephew even said he wanted to get an Android. Most likely they won’t leave Apple. Why? Because getting a new phone and changing platforms can be a pain in the ass. I don’t know of anyone who looks forward to buying a new phone. So they’ll stick with Apple for now even though they don’t love it because they don’t have the time or energy to deal with switching. This is just anecdotal of course but I think it’s instructive. Of course it’s not so great in Android land but I think Apple should have higher aspirations than just being better than Android.

  • Apple could use Kaby Lake processors in 2018 MacBook Air refresh

The MBA is probably still it’s top selling laptop, which is why it is still around. At this point though its geriatric status is embarrassing. Mac decisions in the last five years have been pretty bad as a whole when you think about it.
Just upgrade the form factor with a current chip, a current USB-C/tb port, keep usba and SD card slot, and update the screen. Sell tons of them.
If it’s still their top selling laptop it’s because of price. Not ports or keyboard.
Exactly - there's definitely a market for a more reasonably priced laptop. After the Air, the next option starts at $1300 and you're looking at $1700 to get one with a reasonable amount of storage. Not everyone wants the ability to run dual 4k displays off their laptop; they just want a good laptop.
I’d love to know why the one port fanless MB is still so expensive. Apple should be able to bring the price down by now.

  • Review: The 2018 MacBook Pro with i9 processor is the fastest laptop Apple has ever made, ...

I’m curious what percentage of the buying public needs a laptop that has the same amount of power as a desktop. Isn’t the whole point of a laptop portability? The Alienware core i9 weighs 9 pounds. I certainly wouldn’t want to be lugging that around. Maybe it was a mistake for Apple (and others) to put the i9 in a ultrabook form factor laptop. People say just make it thicker but I remember when people complained about the 3rd gen iPad being thicker and heavier. If the 15” MBP was now 6 (or more) pounds would people be cheering that? I doubt it. Wired dinged this laptop for not being true 4K. Is that really noticeable in dat to day use? And what would a 4K screen do to battery life and price? The machine is already very expensive. IMO if this machine isn’t powerful enough for somebody then they probably should be using a desktop.
