  • Last year's iPhone X beats iPhone XS, XS Max in battery life test

    1) I'm most curious about how the battery is made for the 5.8" iPhone. Is that single battery or is still two separate batteries like in the 6.5" model?

    2) If not for the archaic physical SIM I think they could move the logic board to the top so that the batteries in both models could a single rectangular design that I believe would be less expensive to build and hold more energy.

Do you think they could fix it in a software update if enough people complain?
I think they'll likely resolve it in a SW update even if no one complains. This isn't uncommon for brand new HW on a brand new OS with new firmware.

  • PSA: Apple Watch Series 4's fall detection is off by default for most people

I would HOPE that most people under the age of 65 (and especially much younger) are active enough that fall detection HAS to be disabled to prevent false positives.

If you are not, then god help you.  Get moving.
I'm very curious to see what the limitations of this feature is. I hope AI (or someone else) does an in-depth series of tests to see exactly how it works. Regardless of your age, falling from a ladder when cleaning your gutters is still a potential problem.

  • What a difference a year makes: Apple Watch Series 4 versus Series 3

    Gnomic said:
It appears that all versions of the Apple Watch Series 4 have a sapphire crystal. In Series 3 the aluminum versions feature Ion-X glass.

See the section "What's in your Apple Watch" in this support document titled "Wearing your Apple Watch".  There is no mention of Ion-X glass for any Series 4 watch:

This is a nice upgrade for Series 4 aluminum watches that none of the reviews I read have mentioned.
Something is on Apple’s website is incorrect, and i’f Guess it’s the HT page.

If you click on any of the aluminium models you should see Ion-X listed.

However, what has changed is that all Watches now seem to have ceramic and sapphire backs, instead of plastic and plastic.

  • Inside iOS 12: AutoFill gives password manager apps on your iPhone a big boost

I have iOS 12 installed but I have this image on my phone which lists email account rather than password applications.  I have 1password installed.

    Thanks

I had iOS 12 GM and 1P v7.11 installed with something similar. Toggling the AutoFill Passwords switch did nothing. I resolved it by deleting the 1P app and reinstalling it from the App Store. After I installed it that screen looked like the one's listed by AI.

Note: I did have to go though the 1P setup process again and point to the location of my vault to get my items back in the app's vault.

  • New iPhones can conduct certain NFC transactions even when iOS is not running

This looks like a key stepping stone, and a 'testing of the waters', on the way to digital IDs/passports. I can't wait for a time when all I need to carry with me is my iPhone and/or Apple Watch.

This would be especially helpful while travelling. It would also be helpful in any situation where you need to be able to show ID, but for security reasons you don't want to risk granting access to the contents of your phone.

For my state or federal ID I don't want to be available via NFC without first having to authenticate with Touch ID or Face ID. Imagine a thief not just stealing your iPhone, but also being able to get your name, address, birthday, and other information with a simple NFC reader. From my experience, a college ID tends to be more limited, but even that I'd like the option to have it behind a passcode or biometric for the security conscious.
