  • Researchers find loophole that extends USB Restricted Mode's hour-long timer

Afonin guesses the USB Restricted Mode loophole is the result of an oversight on Apple's part. Defeating (or more accurately postponing the activation of) an otherwise well-thought-out security protocol with readily available consumer products is likely not what Apple had in mind when it created the feature.
To me it sounds like it's by design. If Apple made it so that you need to input your password every hour even when using an accessory that would be a bad tradeoff for their customers. Security is great, but not at the expense of a massive inconvenience.

Maybe we'll see Apple's MFi program advance to where the chips in accessories will need to send a unique and encrypted hash that will be stored in a database on the iDevice that you'll have to authenticate the first time you use it. This would help prevent those obtaining your iDevice through other methods from being able to plug in some other accessory—even Apple accessories, like the aforementioned Lightning to USB 3 Camera adapter—not keep the timer from counting down.

PS: While I don't see Lightning port going away anytime soon (and even once it does there will still be a diagnostics port like on the Apple Watch) with Qi charging and wireless syncing becoming the norm I wonder if it would behoove Apple to allow users to further disable the Lightning port. I'm guessing this won't happen, but I thought I'd mention it for the sake of security.

While I agree that increased security is good, I think a bit much is being made of the USB Restricted Mode. Honestly, how many of us need to worry about Cellebrite hacking our phones?

  • Apple distributes second macOS 10.14 Mojave public beta for testing

Has anyone gotten this message when trying to update, I've tried twice and gotten the same message. I have fiber so my connection should be pretty fast. Thanks.

I'd click on Details and Restore Defaults to remove yourself from the program. Restart, and then download and install the program to re-add yourself to the beta program to see if that fixes the issue. My guess is that it's a SW glitch with the Software Updater, not your ISP bandwidth.

  • Apple distributes second macOS 10.14 Mojave public beta for testing

This beta is noticeably faster than the first beta. It screams.
All the betas have been faster than High Sierra on my Macs. This 3rd beta seems to have resolved all major productivity issues I've had, and the bugs I submitted have been resolved as of beta 3. The only issues remaining are very minor issues that don't affect productivity or are issues with a single 3rd-party app (which is probably the app developer's concern).

I did have an issue after installing beta 3 and then restarting that didn't allow Apple Remote Desktop or file sharing to connect even though the headless Mac showed up in the  Finder sidebar. Disk Utility's First Aid showed some errors I hadn't seen before so I booted into the Recovery partition, per its request, and ran First Aid again. Now everything is working as it should be. This isn't too uncommon with any update, even point updates.

This beta is noticeably faster than the first beta. It screams.
How stable is it though and how much do you get the beachball hang?  What Mac are you running it on?
    1) All the betas have been hella stable. Even more so than many GMs Apple has release under both Cook and Jobs. But as usual, these are still betas so install at your own risk since anything can change at any time and different configurations can yield different results.

    2) People stills get beachballs in macOS?

  • Apple's cheaper iPhones are not the volume sellers pundits predicted: iPhone 8, X are

The size of the X screen, NOT THE PRICE, is what held back a lot of us big screen fanboys from buying it.
Yup, that's what prevented me from buying it. $1000 is actually not that much for a device you will keep for several years. But these days my phone is my primary book reading device so I need a "plus" model.
I still hear/read people saying the iPhone X has a bigger display than the iPhone Plus models. Unfortunately, very few seem to realize their error when you try to explain it.

I'm certainly in the same boat as you and multimedia, but even then I'm not sure I'll be getting a new iPhone this year (which will mean I'll be using my iPhone 7 Plus for an unprecedented 3 years) since my Apple Watch is helping to offload a lot of what I need my iPhone to do (with my Mac also helping as I use it most of all, including sending and receiving phone calls from it on a regular basis).
I've also got a 7+ (but not a watch). It's going to be super hard not to update to an X+ if it comes out this year!
Have you considered getting a Watch? With watchOS 5 most of the limitations I've had with it will likely go away this Autumn when it finally goes live. Meaning, Spotify and SiriusXM will be able to have full dedicated apps that will be able to stream over WiFi and cellular.

Anecdote Warning: I grew up wearing a watch because it was the most convenience way to keep track of time, but that changed around the time I got my first pocketable cellphone. I thought it would be tough to get back into wearing a watch again but I found it quite easy; the benefits for me are simply too great to not wear one.

What I thought would be even harder to adopt—and it was, but only ever so slightly—was wearing my Watch to bed at night to track my sleep. After a few days it felt weird not to wear my Watch at night. So when do I charge it? I mostly charge it when I bath, which is a couple times a day. I also typically have raise to wake disabled with Theater Mode enabled most of the time, and while I'm in bed I put it in Airplane Mode. This gives me about two days of battery life if I wore it constantly.
