  • Amazon has a plan to save vacant mall department stores

Malls are dead and all it took was a global overreaction to COVID to destroy everything. I now know personally several people who’ve died from COVID, but even I recognize the number of people seriously affected range around >2% of a population. Not worth crippling economies and destroying lives for so few people.
I recall a time not too long ago when we underwent a major upheaval in our society when just 3,000 people died.

Regardless, I said quite a few months ago that we should expect people to play the "overreaction" card, especially should the "overreaction" prevent a large number of deaths. It's really a no-win scenario. Prevent a lot of people from dying, and the resulting numbers "prove" we overreacted.

BTW, 2% of the US population is 7 million people. Are you seriously suggesting they're all expendable? Or does it just happen that most of the deaths are in classes of people you believe to be expendable?

  • First Apple Silicon Developer Transition Kit benchmarks show Rosetta performance impact

I know people are waiting to see what kind of numbers this machine puts out, but in a recent interview with John Gruber Apple’s Craig Federighi wanted to stress that the Developer Transition Kit that was released this week should not be compared to any future consumer product.

“Even that DTK hardware, which is running on an existing iPad chip that we don’t intend to put in a Mac in the future, it’s just there for the transition, the Mac runs awfully nice on that system.”

“It’s not a basis on which to judge future Macs, of course, but it gives you a sense of what our silicon team can do when they’re not even trying,” Federighi continued. “And they’re going to be trying.”

  • Apple Watch saves Calgary woman from rapist

According to Profiling Violent Crimes, 4th Edition, the term "rape kit" can also be used to describe the bag of tools and implements to be used in the crime. The headline usage, though somewhat confusing, is correct.

  • Demand for iPhone 11 outpacing supply chain expectations

So, I don't think there's quite as much interest in the iPhone this time around as it was in 2017...
The thing is that these days you're encouraged to reserve a specific pickup time to get your new phone and/or watch.

As such, you arrive at your 9-to-9:30 appointment time to get your phone. Doesn't do much good to arrive early and it makes sales judgements by checking the length of the line pretty much irrelevant. It's not like the old days where you stood in lines a couple of hundred of people long to try to get the model you wanted...

  • New 16-inch MacBook Pro rumored to fit screen in current 15-inch case

Why is it that an iPhone XS is $999 and an iPhone XS Max is $1099, yet a 13” MacBook Pro is $1300 and a 16” MacBook Pro is $3200.

I have never understood why Apple needs a bigger screen to have a $1100 to $1900 premium on a laptop (85% to 146% markup), while it only needs to be a 10% markup on a phone. It’s like saying a Toyota Yaris starts at $13,000 and the next size up Corolla starts at $24,000 to $32,000. Since when is a slightly bigger version only for the most privileged? Maybe when you start giving dividends to the most privileged, who knows.
That $1,300 13" MacBook Pro has a smaller screen, a 4-core i5, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD, Intel Iris Plus Graphics, and 2 TB Ports.

    At a $1,000 difference, a $2,300 15" MacBook Pro has a larger screen, AND a 6-core i7, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD, Radeon Pro 555X Graphics, and 4 TB Ports.

Seems to me you're getting just a little bit more than a larger screen for your "markup".
