  • German government wants Tim Cook to reconsider CSAM plans

Reading a lot of hysterical people who have completely missed how this is implemented.

It's no more a slippery slope than Facebook, Instagram, Google Photos, Youtube, et. al. each scanning content and hashes upon upload. To address the topic of people worried this would devolve into a tool to suppress political dissent: it's trivial to repurpose a political message to evade a hash by reinventing the content - indeed this happens naturally even without such restrictions, while on the other hand it's difficult to repurpose a series of photos or videos to evade filters (see also copyright filters.)

Now onto the hysterics: there is nothing preventing nefarious governments from requesting nefarious deeds from all of the above named services, so the suggestion that governments will uniquely lobby Apple to do this is a shaky argument (especially when considering the above services all have more users than iCloud Photo Library.)

I also don't buy the privacy argument - your Photo library already hashes your photos, that's why you can search your library descriptively (e.g. type "Cat" to get photos iOS "thinks" are cat photos in your library.) This is merely adding a new source of hashes and doing something about matches that should be getting attention. Furthermore it only occurs when using a specific online photo service provided by Apple.

  • Purported 'Apple Watch Series 7' renders show larger speakers, iPhone 12-style straight ed...

This seems like an unlikely interpretation of a non-rounded edge design. While the iPad/iPhone use this design language, this style on a watch is too easily scratched on the facing-side, and uncomfortable on the wearing-side - it's lose/lose.
If they're changing the design to something with harder looking edges, it'll more likely involve a chamfered design which is typical for watch and jewellery design (and Apple have done this before with the iPhone 5.)

  • Users lobby 1Password to abandon new Electron version

Electron on macOS is garbage - there will be plenty of people who move away from 1password because it’ll simply be unusably resource intensive, it won’t even be about sending a message.

Considering how many people at Apple use it, I won’t be surprised if this one gets “sherlocked”.

  • India withdraws Apple Messages from new social media regulations

I wrote my message in direct response to you crowley as you made an argument likening group chat to social media.

While there are people on these forums who blindly support Apple, there are a far greater numbers of people in these forums who are blindly anti-apple. Your post history and the meandering repositioning of your argument here are demonstrations of this.

The forums don't need either of these groups. That's not discourse, it's cheerleading.

  • India withdraws Apple Messages from new social media regulations

While some social media platforms include chat features between individuals or to a group, this isn't what defines a social media platform. In much the same way that a conference call isn't social media. Calling such platforms social media requires twisting the term "social" to mean any other contact without any kind of logic or limitation.

Social media includes public forum and discovery components. To use an example which demonstrates the difference: a person on a social media platform can choose to make a post which can be seen by other unknown users or the general public. This post can also be shared and forwarded in a way that links back to the original poster. All of these are absent in group chat environments such as Apple Messages, Zoom calls and so on.

One can attempt to argue that certain features of chat resemble social media, but these are tenuous and rely on an ignorant audience.
