    I find it a little unfair that it is literally impossible for third-parties to make Bluetooth audio equipment that works as well as AirPods or Beats, and an antitrust argument of Apple using their control of one market (iOS devices) as leverage over another market (accessories) is pretty straightforward.

    (This isn't quite the same as MFI, IMO. In MFI, the specs are out there, all you need to do is apply to be a partner and get your hardware approved and pay the fee.)
    Not really.

    If the industry feels they need it, then they should try to make it a standard and pay apple royalties for using the standard. Then it will come under the FRAND guidelines for patented tech, and apple will have to license it out. Otherwise a company can enter into an agreement with apple for the same. As long as there is no standard around it, it is just proprietary tech, and apple doesn't have to license it out.

    I worked as a developer at Epic early in my career.

    Extremely outdated tech from the 1970s that nobody else in the world is using (like the MUMPS language etc.). Most of the effort at the place goes into managing that historic tech. I left because I would have been unemployable in the software industry after working there for a few years (though it was obvious that I could have earned a lot and it was going to capture the market). 
    Then there is the development processes inspired from microsoft - deliver first and fix later. 

    EPIC was the first reasonably sized company who had a fairly comprehensive product ready when the EHR market caught heat in the 2000s. So, it zoomed past everybody else in market share. The software is unbelievably rickety inside.
    I have a coworker that was a bit more recently a developer at Epic, and I have other sources of information to know that while they're not using something so old as MUMPS anymore, they still have a codebase the size of a modern complex GUI OS written in a language that's been End Of Lifed for over 10 years now, that's not got support for threading, and the Epic software is its own health-related platform unto itself.

    And yes, if you were to find yourself employed to maintain/extend the old codebase in its current primary language, that would make you unemployable in doing anything else other than working with ancient codebases in dead languages, typically chosen by companies that are too cheap to do things the right way the first time in a language that has a long-term future.
    Oh you mean 'Visual Basic'. That is the GUI/client part, the backend server is in MUMPS and most developers wouldn't be involved in that. You had to be pretty good to get into that team.

    I don't imagine they would have transitioned out of that, it is too core to their product and transitioning out would probably kill the product. The core is written in 'M' and they use a post-relational database for the sparceness of the data and speed. All build management tools etc. needed to be built in-house since nothing is available commercially for such out-dated tech.

    Their real boost came when kaiser decided to go with EPIC. That turned them into the big boy among the EHR aspirants back in the day.

    Apple received low marks for customer satisfaction, issue resolution and empathy of store staff to customers and their problems, with 60 percent of respondents calling employees of authorized shops "arrogant," the report said.

    "The entire process seemed very transactional and non-personal, which isn't expected from a brand like Apple in the rest of the world," said Tapuriah.

    Arrogant:   That has been my impression in at least half of my visits to my local Apple Store.   The "I am right and you are wrong" mentality is very strong -- even when asked why their "facts" differ from those of another Apple employee from the same store!   During one drawn out issue of a defective phone being replaced I received 4 different answer from each of 4 different employees -- and each of them insisted that they and only they were correct.   That's arrogance.  

    In fact, in my last visit to that store I thanked the employee for not talking down to me.  That's how common I have found it to be.  (Again, roughly half the time)

    (But that is only in the one store that I frequent -- and I have never, ever experienced any arrogance during any online interaction (support or sales).   Not even a shred of arrogance -- quite the opposite actually).

    Transactional & Impersonal:   I seldom find this.   But when I do, it is only after being handed off to somebody charged with taking my money after I have decided to buy a product or service.   But, other than that, it is almost always the exact opposite:  Very warm and personal.  
    I met an Apple hater from India and he was one of the most arrogant stupid mother**ckers I had ever met. He claimed the Secure Enclave did not secure user data and laughed every time I explained how computer chips worked. I think he thought I was talking about potato chips because he found my knowledge on the subject so funny yet he knew ZERO about chips. Literally nothing about them.

    So I can't blame those Apple employees if that's the attitude in India. Plus look up any scammer video on YouTube these people are complete sh**. I'm starting not to like Indians. Has nothing to do with Apple and all to do with attitude.

    They also have this weird thing when you beat them in an argument they start making random noises. It's like when a kid says "LALALALA!"
    So, you like saw two indians and decided not to like them .... nice attitude. Irony died somewhere in there...

  • Apple boycott by Chinese firms supporting Huawei is escalating

    A small huawei anecdote:

    Couple of my colleagues used to work at Huawei, prior to joining our current firm.

    They were working on a product that was essentially a knockoff of a cisco voice product. There were some important bugs to be fixed, and these guys had multiple tech discussions and finalized on a particular approach to fix the issue. The manager (a chinese) agreed and they dispersed for the day. Couple of days later the manager calls the team for a meeting, and tells them to fix it in a different way that he detailed. He tells them, that is the way cisco fixed the same bug in their product !!

    The Windows OS provides freedom to the user:  he can use touch-screen when that works best then switch to touchpad when that works best.

    Apple is lagging behind.
    Seriously not perfected. It is lame in the first place, and microsoft has struggled to make it work is a more appropriate statement.
