  • Tim Cook responds to Facebook's attack ads with tweet about privacy

I love to see tech giants in a battle. Apple is trying to monetize privacy. Facebook is monetizing its users. Apple revenue comes from its customers. Facebook revenue comes from advertisers. You pay for free services with your data. At least now you will have the chance to decide if that is what you really want to do. By now Facebook and Google know a lot about their users. Though that data will get stale over time. I wonder how many Facebook users would actually pay for an ad-free subscription?
Interesting comment. But I would rather have ads than lose my rights to privacy about my life's details. Perhaps I would be willing to pay Facebook money if they could guarantee that they would never create a file on me. In fact, they may have a file about me even though I've never used Facebook (because other people may have written about me on the Internet, including things like governmental lists of driver's licenses which can be found on the Internet.) I'd pay FaceBook to get rid of my file even though I'm not using FaceBook. But I shouldn't HAVE to pay them to delete information about me. Rather, I should have to opt-in before FaceBook can record details about me.

Curiously, there is an organization in the US, which I won't name, that collects information about everyone on earth for reasons that are important to them, but not to me. They mask their efforts by trying to convince you that they are helping you determine your ancestry. But really, they are helping themselves. I guess to be consistent I should also say that they shouldn't be allowed to record details about me unless I opt-in first. But the more I think about it, the more I realize how hard it is to implement an opt-in procedure.
You really should think for a moment about what you wrote.  While you might be willing to pay Facebook to delete its file on you, having to pay someone not to do something that you dislike has a name; it’s called extortion, and it is illegal.

  • Epic argues Apple has 'no rights to the fruits' of its labor in 'Fortnite' filing

I'm beginning to think that Apple's strategy is flawed. They could have simply tried to respond to Epic's lawsuit by saying "Apple has no legal obligation to accept any software from Epic. We don't like them and will no longer accept anything from them." But no, they are getting into the weeds. They should have just perma-banned Epic. Winning this issue would be the biggest win of all that Apple could obtain. I mean really, why would Apple be interested in accepting software from a company that takes you to court? Apple should even ban the companies that recently created the organization against Apple. You don't think that Google, Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo have companies that they won't allow on their stores? They don't need justification to choose business partners. But there is no better justification than "They are suing us in court." By choosing not to fight for their rights to select business partners, Apple is weakening its right to fight back against them.
That would have been a big mistake, and could be interpreted as using monopoly power to harm another business.  Much better to do what they are doing, which is basically saying "this is ridiculous, a store has every right to charge whatever markup it wants on a product it carries and the manufacturer has every right to say sorry, no deal".  Epic is clearly trying to have its cake and eat it too.  They will ultimately have to determine whether 70% of a lot is better than 100% of nothing from the iOS platform.

  • Zoom macOS install 'shady,' plus video chats aren't end-to-end encrypted

This is deeply troubling. Zoom is essential in the NYC medical community's response. Extremely sensitive things are being discussed on Zoom daily, and if Zoom has a massive "internal" database of all these meetings that is a huge problem. We all know that there are only two kinds of companies, those that have been hacked and know about it, and those that have been hacked and don't know about it. Many are both.

I don't think Zoom understands the kind of weight that is about to come down on it with regard to this false claim of E2E encryption.
    ----
Zoom has a HIPAA compliant healthcare version that anyone in the medical community should be using, obviously.  So, if you are you are ok.  If you are using the free consumer version for professional work, that is shameful and dangerous.

  • Apple to use mini LED backlighting in late 2020 iPad Pro

Put 5G and MiniLED in it and I’ll buy.  This single technology update at a time thing is getting old, particularly for a company that used to be on the bleeding edge.

  • Editorial: Steve Jobs shared secrets of Apple's iPad but nobody listened

My day one purchase of the original iPad remains the most important tech purchase I have ever made.  And I have purchased most Apple products over the years.  Missed the Lisa though.  My current iPad Pro remains my most used device, over my iPhone, iMac or MacBook.
