  • Fitbit owners will need to use a Google account by 2025

Back when they were interesting devices, I wanted to get a Fitbit, but their refusal to share my own health data with HealthKit, and instead keep it siloed for lock-in, was a deal breaker. Never looked back.

  • Apple's iPhone subscription may still arrive in 2022

    laytech said:
Subscriptions tie people in. It's just another form of debt but without any asset. The perception being that you subscribe and then get all the latest models. People may not value or look after those devices, the concern is the consumerism will be just turnover of product.

Subscriptions make sense for software but hardware is like leases on cars, always costs your more and has no sense of attachment. Not sure its a good thing to be honest. If you can't afford to buy it, then get it on a plan with Apple or your phone provider.
The reason to rent or lease is simple — lower monthly cost. I lease a car because it’s cheaper than a new car note to the degree that I find advantageous, and I don’t want to keep a car for a long period. Further, believe it or not but you still have an asset when leasing — at the end of my last 3-year lease I sold the car to another dealer for over $10,000 cash (not a trade-in, I flat out sold it). You can do this when the street value of the leased car is higher than what you owe to the bank for the remainder of the loan (yup, there still is a set loan amount from the financing bank for a leased car).

  • iPhone 14 Pro Dynamic Island shows Apple out-thinking rivals again

    entropys said:

that said, I am worried that there is a screen gap above it. That means a bit of wasted space
I think it's the fact of that space above the island that makes the illusion of it not being there at all convincing...that the entire section feels like a black UI element of the software & not the hardware. That is what I think the point of the feature/illusion is about, to trick you into thinking it's just a dynamic section of the screen that morphs into dark-background notifications, and by placing those containers *around* it make the true dead space feel like just part of a normal screen, which is assisted by the use of true space above it. It's a trick, but it looks like it may work.

We will see if it is effective.

  • A secret tool lets police conduct mass surveillance using app data

    Here we go again.
Police from around the country (snip)

Which country? Why are these articles written as if the US is the only country in the world? Fix your editors!  :|

Thank goodness that Apple is not in the business of selling data!

It’s a US website. Maybe you should adjust your expectations. When you read a US site, wouldn’t it be logical to think they are talking about the US, rather than naively asking “which country?” and demanding the site fix its editors?

    Fix yourself.
In my view, that would be a very bad assumption to make.
Not at all. The site editors have said it multiple times, they default things like currency to the country they operate and publish from. As a reader it requires next to no cognitive load to carry that assumption. I do it with the websites I read all over somehow.
