  • Apple sold about 600,000 HomePods in the first quarter

In related news, the Kia Rio continues to dominate the Ferrari 458 Italia.

  • Steve Jobs and 'Doom' coder John Carmack's relationship a 'rollercoaster' spanning more th...

My peak "gaming" was back in the day with the DOOM and Quake franchises.  Loved them so much.  Still do.

Have Quake IV (I think it is) on the 2009 27" iMac.  Fire it up every now and then.

Not sure were it stands if previous versions were/are avail in the App Store.  I probably shouldn't check....

    Cheers!

  • Ill-informed YouTuber bemoans Apple repair policies after breaking iMac Pro

This is just provoking Apple, for profit (youTube clicks).

I can't imagine any real person spending their own money saying, "Charge me MORE to fix an item (with forever-risk) than replacing it."
(The exception would be something with sentimental value in a normal-price-range).

Trying to put myself in those shoes.  What it boils down to is the info ON the computer.

If I have a backup, and the repair cost is too high (even if it was a $4000-repair against a $5000 computer), considering the risk, just "total" it, A LOT LIKE A  CAR.

If I don't have a backup, and the storage is swappable, a very-generous Apple or Auth-Service-Provider might try to swap the storage to a new machine, since storage-replacement can be safe/possible for some computers (less & less with Apple, but I'll take it for the less chance of failure, esp SSD).

(In this case, it was a "company machine", and no one's 1-copy-wedding-video was on there)

"Totalling" something and expecting repair parts KNOWING ITS AT A FINANCIAL LOSS doesn't make sense, unless one is spending others' money.

  • Google gives up on tablets: Android P marks an end to its ambitious efforts to take on App...

Apples handhelds are so darn good.

We have two iPad mini's (the first with Retina, whenever that was).  They're going strong, no issues, daily use (by kids), good battery life still.  Never even a screen-stutter.
Actually we've worn out the smart covers while the hardware is still near-perfect!  Just realized that, wow.  What does THAT say?

We recently bought the $329 iPad.  It's SO NICE that for $329 we feel like we stole it, and it's not even the best one!
Offering that model for $329 is super generous in my opinion.  Could've easily been $379, which is a big difference mentally.

And we now have an old super-beater iPad 2 that a friend recently gave us.  Even though it struggles at times rendering the graphics in our "Clash of Clans" game and can crash Safari at times (its two only uses), I see that as testimony of how LONG these iPads last; that it still mostly-works with X-years-future Apps.  The multi-touch is still flawless, and rendering issues in a game shows how far the GAME has progressed over the years (way more complex now).  Reasonable battery life too, for its age.

    There are great products.

  • Apple's 77.3 million iPhone, $88.3 billion quarter by the numbers

It would be funny if one took all the iphones ever made, and lined them up end to end, if they'd reach the Moon.

Perhaps the grand strategy for colonizing other planets is to tether said planet and pull it into our solar system.

iPhone 27 (XXVII?) sensors can find the new planet, through a crowd-sourced worldwide sensor-array ("hold phones up toward space....now!").

And iOS27 of course will have the "bring-my-planet" app.

    Heh heh.

    Enjoy the SuperBowl all.
