  • Apple issues invites to October 30 iPad Pro and Mac 'There's more in the making' event in ...

Such beautiful images in the invites.

    Here's a challenge:  Pick a Favorite.

    Cheers.

  • Apple and the aggressive rollout of its iPhone XS vision for the future

I joined the Apple Ecosystem with OS X (10.3, Panther) on an iBook G4 (white plastic, $1799 [sold incidentally for nearly $500 in 2009]).

I've never had a problem with X being pronounced "Ten".  Never.

    First iPhone was 4S.

With the new Xs, I can't stop myself from reading it in my head as "Excess".  Man.

    Got to shake that.....

  • The best external monitors for your Thunderbolt 3 MacBook Pro

Can't get the embedded quotes right:
    MacPro originally said:
On your aside, I don't have an iMac but the last few Apple monitor I have owned  have all suffered from a weird darkening area that creeps in from both sides in a non-uniform almost organic structural way.  It isn't visible most times but on an all white screen very noticeable.  This hapened with a pair of 30" Apple Cinema displays and has again with my current 27" Apple LCD.

    anantksundaram then said
I am not sure that the monitor on the iMac has this problem?

    I say:

My 27" iMac display did this.  I ordered it 2-days after the 27" was announced in Nov 2009.

I was ready to buy pre-announcement, but didn't know 27" was coming.  When I heard it I almost feinted with delight.

Anyway, great description by MacPro, that's exactly what happened.  "Organic darkening", ameoba-shaped, crept in (from the top).  Esp noticeable on the grey-bootup screen.  Not really noticeable when any image is shown, but clean-white it was as MacPro says.

I was nervous about the Genius bar not "seeing" the issue (think car-dealership-evil), but a few days before AppleCare ended, I hauled all 30-lbs of it to a Genius Bar and upon power up (grey-screen still), the Genius instantaneously said (with funny accent):   "Oh that's ObNOXious", and ordered the $597 screen-part under applecare.

I had it back a few days later and it's been fine ever since.  Coming up on 9 years overall.

My use case is just internet, e-mail, and 56,000+ family Photos in one always-growing mega-library.

    Off-Topic:
Deeply Loved iPhoto and everything about it.
Frustrated by Photos which seems like a step backwards (but I know it's me).

  • Apple warns last Photo Print Products orders must go out before Sept. 30

Am I reading this right that Calendars will soon not be a part of Photos?

We've made a family calendar every year since our 12 year old was born.  We order a dozen or so for different family members.

Of course the calendars are pix of the kids, but also family events.

We didn't realize it at the time, but they're GREAT family heirlooms to review.  Grab "2012" and flip through it, and be nostalgic.

I wonder if the extensions would provide less functionality, different functionality, or more functionality.

I'm going to sound like a hater, and I apologize in advance, AND I blame myself for not being able to keep my mind current & flexible:

    1) I *loved* iMovie HD, and made about 50 kid-movies over the years on a iBook G4.  Intuitive, and the app disappeared and it was all my creativity  The redo to iMovie 08 to make it easier was so hard and counter-intuitive I never made another movie again.  And of course I can't burn DVDs anyway.  [I know there's Internet-only methods that are probably "better".  Haven't been able to get my mind there.]

    2) I loved iPhoto, heard that Photos could be opted out when the O/S was updated, but got Photos anyway.  Really don't like the interface for our 55,000 pix, and now our biggest family product, the Calendar, will be gone?

I know it's a mobile world, but us (mental-)Dionsaurs are REALLY getting left behind.  (Cue the SJ quotes about death being a good part of life to move on.  I'm really living it).

  • China's Smartisan says Apple has 'lost its soul' in pitch for new smartphone

These "challenges" can be cute and funny in real time, but years later they end up looking pretty bad.

See the Palm CEO who said Apple wasn't going to just walk-in and be better, or the horrible "funeral" ?MS? had for the iPhone when Windows phone came out.

    Amateur-Hour indeed.

So enjoy the cute-ness when it happens, and really enjoy the whatever-you-call-it five years later.
