  • Apple cut too much by removing MagSafe from the iPhone 16e

    Meh.
First, wired charging is better. Period. It’s faster, more reliable and more efficient. Even with mag safe you can only get about 75% efficiency with wireless charging. Note that if you have a case it will be even worse, so you’re throwing away 25% of the power every time you charge. Unless you’re too lazy to plug in your phone in which case you have bigger issues and I can’t help you.

As far as accessories go it’s really not an issue. I have a mag safe wallet that I love but it connects to my case. I suspect the majority of people have a case on their phone so the number of people who will be affected by this is likely quite small.

As far as StandBy goes, I was really excited to see it since I have my phone on my nightstand as a clock. Except it turns off after several minutes (according to Apple there’s a setting to leave it on but I have yet to find it) The end result is I use a 3rd party clock app. I plug my phone in every night, use the clock app and it works perfectly.

  • Apple ends its Qualcomm dependency with the new C1 modem chip

Eliminating Qualcomm modems will save Apple billions annually, as Apple paid around $23 per modem and $8 in patent fees per device
So, should we expect a major price drop this fall? I’m not holding my breath. I expect them to bump the 17 prices up by $100-$200, based on what they did with the 16E.

Yeah - we never seem to see the cost savings in our own pocketbooks. Nominally, one can argue that it allows Apple to spend more on other components, giving us more phone for the money but it ends up being a giant shell game.

I seem to remember people saying Apple could never build a modem, or if they did it would be inferior. Well, they built one, and now time will tell if it holds up to Qualcomm modems.
I don’t think anyone said Apple couldn’t build a modem. The question was always whether they could build one that was competitive on cost and performance.

The C1 doesn’t have mm wave capability which has virtually no practical impact because virtually no one can use it. It does have an impact on perception, though since the stats look worse on paper. Ultimately, modem performance is dependent on chip design as well as the antenna and overall phone design (you have to make sure you’re not holding it wrong, right?) this makes true, accurate comparisons difficult but I’m interested to see the final installed performance comparison and hopeful Apple can break free of QC

  • A new CVS iPhone app aims to make shopping at the pharmacy less frustrating

CVS is the worst. I suppose they'll give you 48 screens of digital receipt to scroll through before you can hit 'ok?'
