  • How Tim Cook gets Trump to help Apple

It never ceases to amaze me that so many people would prefer Tim Cook to publicly shun Trump and refuse to work with him.

Gruber over on Daring Fireball was practically soiling himself in rage over Tim Cook congratulating Trump.

Just because Tim Cook is gay, people on the left seem to assume that he must be left leaning and woke to the core. They forget that he has plenty of centre right attributes that kind of matter in business. For all they know he might be a Republican voter!

People just need to move on. It makes good business sense to deal with Trump, end of discussion.
All of the complaints about Donnie are true, but Cook’s job as CEO is to do what’s best for Apple. In this case it means sucking up to a wannabe dictator. Fortunately for Tim it’s pretty easy - Kamala showed how easy it was to manipulate Trump in their debate.

  • iPhone 17 Slim too thin for SIM tray, may not have mmWave

It’s fine regarding mm wave as it’s almost useless for most people. Additionally, it’s almost nowhere here in the USA. And except for Japan which installed a network for the Olympics, no other country seems interested either.
My thoughts exactly. mmWave was nothing more than a big number to impress people and convince them to switch to 5G. It’s all but useless in practice.

  • How to use the new iOS 18 iPhone Control Center

I don't like that Apple crammed so many functions in the group in the upper left. If they'd left it unmolested I'd be a happy man. I had to add a cellular button on the bottom because the button in the group is tiny and I don't have "it takes two hands to hold a soft drink" fingers.
Agreed, but you can always delete it and just replace it with the 4 functions you want. (Airplane mode, Bluetooth, WiFi and cellular modem from the old layout)

  • Apple's browser rules deemed anticompetitive, says UK competition body

So they want to allow running apps in Safari. That’s like taking the screens off your windows in the middle of the Amazon. Can you imagine all the security issues? We’ve already seen them on windows and MacOS.

Apple always has to be dragged kicking and screaming to get them to do the decent thing
There is pretty of competition, it's called Android and Windows. Don't bring that sewer into  my Walled Garden..
In reality the walled garden is, to a large extent, the problem itself.

Apple abuses its 'gatekeeper' status and developers and consumer rights and competition bodies complain.

Often the conclusions are that Apple is in effect harming consumers and stifling rival innovation.

We have now seen numerous investigations on varying fronts and from varying jurisdictions reaching the same conclusions.

The great news for you is that you never lose the option of ignoring alternatives. That doesn't mean others shouldn't have the options they would like.
Minneapolis is a hub for Delta airlines. Several years ago people started complaining that Delta was abusing its pseudo monopoly position and ticket prices were too high. Then others pointed out that we also have the luxury of far more nonstop flights that don’t require connections which is a huge advantage. How do you account for this?

it’s similar with Apple. Any walled garden needs a gatekeeper. That has costs but also benefits and people are quick to tally the costs while taking the benefits for granted. For me, privacy and security are well worth the costs. To be sure, you can’t simply take the ‘benevolent dictator’ approach but that’s clearly not the case with Apple.
