Twitter loses half its ad revenue, still weighed down by debt
Elon has done well with Tesla and SpaceX but those were primarily tech companies. Twitter is a social media company - what makes a good social media company is different from what makes a good tech company. Elon is also not necessarily the same person he was when he was building Tesla and SpaceX. The bottom line is his prior successes do not guarantee he has the skill set to make Twitter successful.
Many people like to quote Elon's saying "move fast and break things." That works in some areas but in Twitter's case the main thing he broke was its revenue stream. If you're building a ship on shore you can fix what you break. If you're out to sea and you break the hull you've got some issues. Beyond that, Elon & Twitter have been slow to fix what they've broken. The approach seems to be trade a small problem for a bigger problem then move on.
Things were not all wine and roses but Twitter was doing OK but had its issues when Elon bought it. After purchasing he proceeded to make a series of changes that were universally considered to be ill-advised and poorly thought out. Even the changes that had potentially positive elements were poorly executed. The result has been the destruction of Twitter's reputation, image, with that it advertisers and revenue base.
What's quite interesting that the people who are optimistic about Twitter's potential with Elon's leadership have little more to say than "well, he did good with Tesla and SpaceX so that's proof that he knows what he's doing!" we're 9 months into this debacle and while the bull has stopped (or at least slowed down) knocking over shelves, he's still in the china shop and the mess still remains.
Twitter had a very commanding position in social media. It was the social media platform and not just by a little. Its market dominance was astounding. Further, it had become a trusted, relied upon platform for many companies to make news and press releases. Even now most people have a hard time naming another significant platform. What that means for companies is they may decide to stay on Twitter simply because even with its faults and issues there's not a better choice. That also means Twitter still has a chance. The bull may have done a lot of damage but the china shop was big enough that it still has wares to sell and can potentially turn itself around. As long as the bull sits down and shuts up.

Glucose monitoring app glitch exposes vulnerabilities in digital health tools
For all the non-diabetics reading this:
When treating diabetes, the key to avoiding long-term complications is tight glucose control. Initially, that was done with periodic spot checks using a fingerstick glucose monitor. For some time companies have made glucose monitors that have a long-term sensor applied to the skin. These allow for continuous glucose readings in they are also more discrete so you don’t have to take out a bunch of equipment, prick your finger, etc. Many diabetics also use insulin pumps that continually infuse insulin rather than giving intermittent boluses. These pumps were another advance that allow for better control.Recently companies have started to make close loop systems in which the continuous glucose monitor communicates with the insulin pump to adjust the infusion rate based on the readings. If the sensor was giving erroneously high readings, it could well have instructed the pump to increase the insulin infusion rate leading to dangerous hypoglycemia.Another phenomenon of insulin therapy is that many diabetics do not get symptomatic with hypoglycemia until the blood sugar is dangerously low, so it’s entirely possible for such a system to put a patient in a dangerous situation without warning, and in which they would be unable to correct the problem because of confusion caused by the hypoglycemia.
@eightzero said “I can't imagine being in a position where a loss of the tech (monitor and app) threatens my life.” What does he think a fingerstick glucose monitor is? Prior to continuous monitors that was all people used and a single point of failure with a finger stick monitor could have equally dangerous consequences. The fact of the matter is people with type one diabetes are dependent on technology for both quality of life and to avoid complications like kidney failure, dialysis, blindness and limb amputations.

Hands on with visionOS -- using the Apple Vision Pro operating system
StrangeDays said:darkvader said:You know, this thing could actually be useful (if it runs Mac apps) or completely useless and stupid (if it doesn't).I wonder which one will happen?
https://www.macrumors.com/2023/06/06/apple-vision-pro-mac/Apple’s headset is not just VR, though and there is a lot of potential. In typical Apple fashion they put work into integrating it with macs and the rest of their lineup and focused a lot on the interface and usability. Hopefully it keeps progressing.I don’t have a use and can’t justify $3,500 for one but I’d love to try one.Edit: I haven’t read anything but I assume you can pair it with AirPods? The spatial audio and improved audio quality would be an awesome compliment to the headset. -
FTC sues Amazon, alleging users are being tricked into signing up for Prime
Best way to avoid this is to simply not use Scamazon. They permanently lost me as a customer years ago with their crappy customer service. Their abysmal treatment of employees and shady business practices are just icing on the cake. It seems like nowadays they’re little more than a front for fencing cheap Chinese knockoffs and fakes anyway.
