Apple introduces iPhone 14 & iPhone 14 Plus -- with satellite connectivity
Madbum said:bubblefree said:Getting rid of the SIM tray is a stupid move. In a world of open standards, where SIM cards are still used everywhere in the world, why move to esims only? The old model where you had both esim and physical SIM tray was the best option and gave customers choice. Apple's reasoning around multiple esims and security is nonsense. They could have multiple esims and a physical SIM tray if they wanted. If people wanted security then use an esim, if they wanted convenience then use their physical SIM card.
I wonder if this move is related to Apple bowing to pressure from US carriers who don't want people to avoid roaming costs by using a local country SIM card when they travel? If so, it opens up another antitrust issue that Apple could do without.More to the point on eSIMs, the international versions still have a SIM tray, so it’s really not an issue. -
More USB-C speed won't fix users' problems with cables
‘One connector to rule them all’ we were promised, except the cables are all different. Now we have identical looking cables with varying capabilities and no clear way to tell them apart. The same goes for the USB C jacks on devices. They’re all the same and many are labeled but many aren’t.It all sounds nice, but in reality what we have is the same situation we had before, just with cables that are indistinguishable from each other. Is this actually better? Doesn’t seem like it. -
Japan finally hopes to ditch floppy discs 24 years after Apple did
“For a country that at least manufactures the latest technology if it doesn't also invent it, Japan has a remarkable history of sticking with old methods. It was only in 2019 that the last pager service ended, for instance.”I work in healthcare and most physicians still carry a pager. For their purposes they are in many ways superior to other methods. Our hospital also has devices called Voceras - they’re small devices you can clip to your scrubs that have a speaker and a microphone and can be used to communicate with other staff. The physicians I know all hate them and prefer their pagers. Sometimes newer is not better. -
Zoom installer flaw can give attackers root access to your Mac
WilliamM said:What is the auto updater Process Name? Then maybe I could kill it in Activity Monitor.
I don't see anything that looks to be associated with Zoom running on my computer, but I have not used Zoom since the last restart. -
