  • HDMI cable purchasing is about to get a whole lot more complicated

    Beats said:
Apple should create a new cable (USB-C?) that makes HDMI obsolete. HDMI has so many issues nowadays it needs to be discontinued.

A new high bandwidth cable that isn’t dependent on itself, so it doesn’t matter if you bought it at a thrift store or a high end audio website it acts the same. The bandwidth is future proof to 20 years+ so it can handle anything that’s thrown at it. New features will be dictated by the hardware/software and the cable is just a tube for features. For example PlayStation 6 wants to add 3D images to a TV: done. Apple TV 6 wants to add an exclusive audio standard like Spatial Audio to receivers: done. The cable you bought is irrelevant because the capability is so high from the start.

Can a new “HDMI 3.1a gen 3x Series 2” standard add these features? Sure. But the fact it has the same form-factor adds more chaos to sort through. HDMI needs to end ASAP.
Now I see why Apple was pushing USB-C over HDMI
Except USB C isn’t any better. In many ways it’s worse. For starters, USB C is just the connector. You have no idea what it’s connecting to. It could be USB 3, USB 4, thunderbolt or just a plain power port. And a given USB C cable may be capable of supporting one use but not the others.

In general, HDMI cables have been simpler. They either work or they don’t.

  • Apple execs explain why you should use Apple Maps over competitors

I’ve been using Apple Maps almost exclusively in Minneapolis for several years and been satisfied overall. I wish it had the ability to easily add multi-point trips or add stops. Since I got a Tesla I use the tesla map far more as it’s far better integrated with the car. Apple Maps is also quite poor at locating EV charging stations.

  • NSO considering killing Pegasus spyware under financial & lawsuit pressure

I would rather Apple actually fix flaws like these instead of hiding behind the censorship of lawsuits.

Maybe if they actually paid their security researchers properly, they wouldn't have this problem... a 0-day, no-click infection on the latest software should easily get a payout of multiple millions considering what black hat agencies would pay for it... and all Apple pays is $1M, and that's assuming they don't find some reason to de-escalate the level of severity in order to pay less...

Apple should be paying more than black hats, not saying they will pay a certain amount and not even paying that (or fixing the flaws)

Apple really dropped the ball on this.
I completely agree but at the same time there will always be holes and always be people exploiting them. The fact that Apple had to resort to a lawsuit tells me they either couldn't find the hole or couldn't plug it.

This whole deal strikes me something like a ransomware attack - NSO creates a nasty bit of attack-ware, then says "for $200 million we'll drop it." Seems like the ethical thing to do would be to drop it without asking for $200  million.

  • Apple & Google have unfair 'vice-like grip' on smartphone markets, says UK regulator

iPhone and Android are a de facto duopoly, but I would argue that it's actually because of consumer choice. There have been other platforms - Nokia, Palm, Microsoft and Blackberry have all had competing platforms and they all died out because they lacked significant consumer adoption.

The reviews I read of the Windows phone OS were generally positive but developers never really got on board, despite the fact that Microsoft paid them. After Apple opened up iOS to developers the App Store quickly became more important than the phone itself. Ultimately this was a big part of the demise of Windows Phone. Apple didn't cause this - consumers did.

As much as people here like to rag on Android, having a strong, viable alternative is good for both platforms. As good as iOS is, there have been many good ideas that came from Android and I can confidently say that Android competition has spurred Apple to develop and improve iOS/iPadOS.

Ultimately, with things like smartphones, within reason I think a duopoly is better - there's still competition, but the limited number of platforms mean developers are not spread too thin trying to create and support apps for 10 different systems. If you look at the number of apps available on the App Store, it's hard to argue that there's no competition.
