What about the waste that comes from building to the lowest common denominator? How do you build a modern smartphone that has to be designed so that anyone can repair it? If not everyone, then where do you draw the line?

I used to repair iPhones a lot and it wasn't a big deal for me, but that was before they had IP68 ratings. After that they did become more problematic. I did it because of my "tech infatuation," as you call it, which is also why I rad this article and watched the teardown. I don't think it's "tech infatuation" to want the best device possible and not expecting everything made by a company to be repairable by the customer. Does that also mean AirPods Pros can have batteries users can replace? How exactly would that work?

Not sure what you mean by 'lowest common denominator' but you seem to be using a straw man argument to make your claim. No one says that everyone should be able to fix an iPhone but we've seen designs in the past that required disconnecting the logic board to replace the battery. How about the Magic Mouse (apart from the incredibly stupid decision to put the charging port on the bottom.) The entire assembly is glued together making battery replacement next to impossible. Design decisions like these are completely unnecessary and more a sign of laziness than anything else.

I was at the Apple Store last week looking at iPads and got accosted by sales people twice gushing about Apple Intelligence. They insisted on showing me how it could be used to remove stuff from photos. ok. Cool. I don’t need that. My MacBook Pro has it - I’ve yet to be wowed. I get it, ‘AI’ is the latest buzzword and Apple doesn’t want to be left out but in my daily use it makes zero difference. Likewise it will have zero effect on my purchasing decisions.

First, wired charging is better. Period. It’s faster, more reliable and more efficient. Even with mag safe you can only get about 75% efficiency with wireless charging. Note that if you have a case it will be even worse, so you’re throwing away 25% of the power every time you charge. Unless you’re too lazy to plug in your phone in which case you have bigger issues and I can’t help you.

As far as accessories go it’s really not an issue. I have a mag safe wallet that I love but it connects to my case. I suspect the majority of people have a case on their phone so the number of people who will be affected by this is likely quite small.

As far as StandBy goes, I was really excited to see it since I have my phone on my nightstand as a clock. Except it turns off after several minutes (according to Apple there’s a setting to leave it on but I have yet to find it) The end result is I use a 3rd party clock app. I plug my phone in every night, use the clock app and it works perfectly.
