Apple poaches Tesla car designer Andrew Kim
rogifan_new said:Anyone who doesn’t think Project Titan will eventually result in a vehicle of some sort is nuts. Apple needs another big revenue generator and software licensing to an existing automaker isn’t it. Besides when has Apple ever been successful putting their software in someone else’s hardware? Can Apple be another Bosch (major supplier to many automotive subsystems to the OEMs, such as ABS) in the auto industry? Most likely not, it takes many years to foster a close relationship with the OEMs to allow "outside" subsystems in OEM cars. The OEMs are already wary of CarPlay and AndroidAuto (remember Toyota's holdout?).So Apple may have to go it alone for its own complete car. Tesla started from scratch with the INTENT to make a complete car. We don't know if Apple had the same original intent. -
Qualcomm's Snapdragon 855 is over a year behind Apple's A12 Bionic, lacks a premium Androi...
First Qualcomm couldn't keep up in the smartwatch chip race and stopped updating on a yearly basis. Now multiple vendors are challenging Qualcomm's modem chips. QC cannot afford to skip a year. Having the first 5G modem chip won't be enough, especially when 5G won't benefit anyone in 2019.And a settlement with Apple awaits. 2019 could be brutal to QC.I'd like to see Apple buy the modem engineers (a la PA Semi) to complete the vertical chip integration. -
Apple unlikely to release first 5G iPhone until 2020 or later
Mike Wuerthele said:GeorgeBMac said:I would count that as a mistake on Apple's part. And a failure on Intel's part.
Multiple vendors are rolling out 5G and, it appears that, the U.S. may be falling behind China.
But, most importantly, the stories are presented that "It will be delayed a year".
But, since most people keep their phones for 2-4 years, the impact on MOST iPhone customers will be far more than waiting "a year".
And that multi-year delay may have significant ramifications: We have seen that progress in communications technologies -- from T1 & copper dial-up lines to cable/WiFi to wireless to LTE -- have had some of the greatest impact on computing of any other factor. And, 5G has a potential to be one of biggest advances in that long history.
Is there any reason for this delay other than the U.S. - China security feud (thus blocking Chinese vendors) or the Apple-Qualcomm feud or Intel's incompetence? In other words, is there any valid (technical) reason for the delay? If the technology is there, why would Apple wait?
I for one would not want to spend a grand on a phone that is soon to be obsolete.
2) There are still 5G "standards" to shake out, as well as implementation details, because once again, we've got battling ideas from the carriers on what is best.I completely agree with your two points. Spot on. 4G isn't even worldwide yet.Just like Apple got bashed waiting a year introducing a 3G-capable iPhone. -
Review: The Nekteck 480GB Thunderbolt 3 drive sidesteps Apple's flash storage pricing
Mike, how would you compare this product to the 500 GB OWC Envoy Pro? (also TB3, slightly slower speed but 3 year warranty vs. 1 year; both permanently attached cables) The speed difference doesn't bother me. I won't be doing heavy video editing. I prioritize reliability, especially related to heat buildup. -
iPhone XS Max dramatically outselling iPhone XS, Apple Watch Series 4 sales exceeding all ...
I'll go from a 6s along with a 4 (for second SIM function) to a Xs in December. Dual SIM won me over. Xs Max is too large for me, but I definitely see the appeal. Xs Max may win over some Galaxy Note users (who favor screen size).I think Xr sales will be massive, especially with the AW4 with its great reviews.Add: The "s" cycle is really underrated, especially this one.
