Apple says EU interoperability laws pose severe privacy risks
This is poorly worded. That’s not really what the EU demands. This text suggests that Apple should share the technology. This is not true. What is demanded is that Apple doesn’t lock other developers out from gaining access to things like the microphone, so that they aren’t locked out from competing.Interoperability is the requirement that Apple share its technology with rivals, so that they can provide users with features such as recording audio through an iPhone's microphone. For example, not being allowed by Apple to access the NFC chip.If it so happens that Apple doesn’t allow for direct access, but instead through frameworks they created, they must ensure those frameworks offer Apple the same features as they do third parties.
The EU doesn’t demand Apple to “give away” the technology ownership itself.Edit: posting messages on this forum is a terrible experience on mobile. The text above I could not set back to regular text after being changed to “quote” even though I didn’t select it. -
New Magic Mouse said to fix everything that's been wrong with it for 15 years
ergonomics and tech need to be fixed:
- current design hurts your wrist over time
- glass-like material feels gross
- you cannot press two buttons at the same time
- in fact you don’t feel buttons at all
- oh and no scroll wheel. You have to slide your finger over glass with zero tactile feedback
- you can’t right click without hovering the finger t
- poll rate stinks
- DPI stinks
- USB connector in a weird spot.
The entire product in 2024 is a joke.

BBC cries foul over Apple Intelligence headline notification summarizations
Apple’s small language model (a true LLM doesn’t fit and properly run on a current gen mobile device) is pretty bad at rewriting, summarizing, etc. Claude or ChatGPT would never summarize this poorly.
BBC is right to challenge Apple about this issue - they need to fix it. But I fear this only works when Apple involves LLMs on the server, because these models are capable of proper summarization. -
Apple ending iCloud backup support for iOS 8 and earlier on December 18
Now, iOS8 is ancient and I totally get that there are limits. However, I have problems with the fact that *storage* is affected. It shouldn’t matter. What if Apple starts to aggressively push people to new iOS versions and therefore to new hardware just to present your data from being deleted?Storage capabilities should be agnostic of where the data is sourced from. Even when Apple coupled hardware with software (e.g on device encryption). -
Hands on: Apple's USB-C accessories leave us wanting more
I think they keyboard is just fine as it is (but too expensive).
However, that mouse!…
- users need to feel a left and right button
- users need to feel a left click and a right click
- same for a scroll wheel
- the shape needs to avoid carpal tunnel syndrome
- the charge port needs to be on the back to charge while used (for gamers especially)
- the click latency needs to be reduced
- the polling rate needs to be increase
