  • HDMI cable purchasing is about to get a whole lot more complicated

The Apple Discussion Forums (Apple TV Hardware section) is chocked full of questions and issues about getting Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos working with their Apple TV 4K, AVR gear, sound bars, and TVs. Lots of arguing over HDMI cables (48gbps certified, 16gbps certified, etc.) AVR and TV settings to enable things, misinformation about HDR, HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision. It usually boils down to blaming the Apple TV for all their troubles. I mean, how could Sony, Denon, Samsung, Marantz, Yamaha, TCL possibly be the cause. Third party hardware/firmware is always assumed to be perfect by those with issues.

The HDMI cable is the root cause of issues most of the time with the the length, the speed, the version being the culprits. And of course Samsung TVs don't support Dolby Vision but hawks Samsung's proprietary HDR10+ format. Talk about a labyrinth.

My biggest issue has been HDCP. Trying to play copy protected content from an Apple device has turned into a crap shoot. I’ve even had movies stop playing 30 minutes in.
And as someone else mentioned - you blame the Apple device, when it is probably the cable, receiver, TV, etc. (anything else in the chain).  Just because you ONLY have issues with the Apple device, doesn't mean the Apple device is the issue.

The original HomePod was ahead of it’s time and unfortunately it was underappreciated.
Underappreciated?  It was way overpriced and was stuck working only with Apple devices and services (mostly).  The fact that Apple never opened it up to every device (Bluetooth connectivity) and most services was the biggest disservice Apple made to the HomePod.  They had YEARS to make something of that HomePod and it basically remained unchanged until it was discontinued.  By then, people realized that it was either a mini version that could not produce comparable sound or nothing, so the HomePod became a cherished commodity almost overnight.

Newsflash -- not everyone uses Apple Music.
They won't add BT as Cook knows they can use the HP to force people to continue to subscribe to Apple Music.
    I doubt that.

Did you know that an iPad/iPhone/Mac can play the audio from many apps/music services on a HomePod?  And you can set a default music app for verbal music commands to a HomePod.

  • Roku update that broke AirPlay & HomeKit has yet to be fixed weeks later

Where is the option to play OTA TV on my Apple TV? My TCL/Roku runs that.

I'd buy a 4k Apple TV with a ATSC 3 next gen tuner and a coax plug on the back.
Roku does not have a tuner built in.  Your TCL TV happens to run the Roku OS, but the tuner is part of the TV, not the "Roku".

You have to have a TV w/tuner with both Apple TV & Roku (unless you have network based tuner from SiliconDust).  And yes - with a network based tuner, OTA TV is free via the HDHomeRun app on the Apple TV.  AND - SiliconDust has an ATSC3, 4K, 4 x tuner network based box today.  I'm in the Indianapolis, Indiana, USA region & have about 15 4K channels available.

    I haven't seen a TV yet that has a built-in ATSC3 tuner...

  • Rio Arc review: An elegant HomeKit-connected heater to keep you warm this winter

It's a nice looking device, but I wouldn't trust any space heater with "smart" controls.

Nearly all space heaters you buy include warnings not to run them unattended.  The ones in my home are unplugged when not in use.  Despite all of the latest safety features, I think the risk of fire, should something fail, is always going to be too high for me to leave a device plugged in 24x7, controllable by a remote app.

I also don't leave toasters or coffee makers or other small appliances with heaters plugged in when they're not in use.  They sometimes fail, and when they do, fires sometimes start.  There are news articles every year about fires that start because of faulty appliances or space heaters.  I really don't want to become the next such statistic.

    -------------

BTW, the article says that the 2000W unit isn't available yet.  I'm not surprised.  1500W is about the maximum you will ever find on a device designed to connect to a 15A circuit (15A * 120V = 1800W, and manufacturers always leave a margin, because there are always other devices plugged in to the same circuit).

A 2000W unit will draw a minimum of 16.7A on a 120V circuit.  We can expect that if they release such a device, it will require a 20A and/or a 240V circuit (much like room air conditioner units typically require).  For most houses, this will mean an electrician will need to run a new circuit from the service panel.
You do realize this is sold outside the US market, and not all markets use 120V, right?  The article even states that it was originally only available outside the US (hence the display on the unit in Celsius)...

  • Hands on with the new features in iOS 15.2

So how does an app like Trainline connect to domains (e.g. www.paypalobjects.com) when it’s not been launched since boot and I’ve not used the app and background app refresh is turned off?
So has nobody else explored the Privacy Report? I'm surprised that apps are active in the background even though they have never been launched. Is this the new iOS order, can apps run persistently now?
Even though there might be a reference to "background", the "app" is not running in the background.  It has "hooks" that tell the OS to wake up a small part of the app, to update network, content, etc.  There are 4 or 5 (I don't remember exactly) reasons/ways an app can hook into the OS to be woken up on events (new message received, new e-mail received, etc.).  One of them is for background music play for 3rd party apps, etc.

But the full app is not running and the background, and the "hooked" part is not running all the time - only when it's "hook" is triggered, and even then for a limited time.
