  • Apple releases new build of iOS 15, iPadOS 15 developer beta 2

Are the dev and public betas the same?

I have the got the dev beta just for speed

But wondering if the public may be more stable/suited to daily use
The betas are the same.  Usually the dev version is released first, then after a while the same dev beta is released as a public beta.  Sometimes they skip a particular dev beta, and don't release another public beta until the next dev beta after that.

You can tell the version by looking at the build number.

  • Apple explains why getting iPhone apps outside the App Store is a bad idea

Everyone has been going back and forth but at the end of the day, let me put it in this way:
    • There is 1 place where you can get IOS apps.
    • There is 1 place where a developer can sell IOS apps
    • There is 1 place where you can buy IOS apps.
Notice how it's always "1" place? This is the main issue, and in this regards Apple does have a monopoly (since only apple can sell IOS apps). Apple isn't denying this but also not acknowledging it because it's stupid to do so. Their statements/counterpoints about security and etc so far all point toward one narrative and for one outcome. And the outcome is to disallow side loading apps, disallow 3rd party app stores and for Apple to be the sole gatekeeper, in other words have a monopoly.

Yep - because there's only one company that makes iOS & iOS compatible devices.  Apple.  This does not make it a monopoly.

It's their product and consumers can decide to buy it, or buy Android.  Consumers have a choice.

    1. Apple makes some of the IOS apps,
    2. Apple does not make all the IOS apps.

The monopoly isn't about Apple making apple devices either, the monopoly lies in the way that you can get, sell and install the apps. There is only 1 place where you can get IOS apps.

As for consumer choice, there is no consumer choice. You're confusing all "apps" vs "IOS Apps". There are many ways to get "apps" but 1 way to get IOS apps.
You missed the point.  It's Apples product and Apples ecosystem.  Apple sets the rules.  Period.

There is consumer choice - Android.  Don't like Apple's mobile products/ecosystem/rules?  Buy Android.

What do you think about Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft's gaming systems?  They only allow "apps" (games generally, but not necessarily - Plex, VLC, etc.) to be sold through their App Store & mandate the same % cut.  Their products, their ecosystems, their rules.
OK, so taking that logic to its inevitable conclusion....

My Internet provider is Comcast. It's their product and their ecosystem, so they set the rules right? They say what I can and can't do with the service they provide in their ecosystem?
This is not a valid comparison, but actually yes - if you have home internet service, some ports are blocked and you cannot run e-mail servers, etc.

A better comparison would be with Comcast cable boxes they supply - you're not allowed to tell them what channels they will provide.  You're not allowed to make them let you rent/purchase PPV from Google or Amazon (stores).

  • Apple adds Windows Precision Touchpad to Boot Camp, eight years late

IF Apple and Microsoft are working to bring Windows to the M1 -- that opens the door to it running on iPads under a BootCamp scenario

That would finally give the iPad the power it needs to be fully functional both in tablet mode and in laptop mode.

The iPad team has been dragging their feet on it long enough.   Maybe, if nothing else, the thought of Windows running on the iPad might get them moving.
Seriously. That horse is dead. It is not going to move no matter how many times you hit it with that stick.
He still has a lot of information wrong, but at least he's no longer blaming Apple for Microsoft's lack of Windows licensing.

As I said, the licensing issue stems from the fact Windows is not (yet) fully developed to run on ARM processors.  It's a technical issue rather than a financial one.
It's silly to portray this as a licensing issue:  Microsoft is in the business of selling software, they would not withhold a viable product for some silly ideological reason like the Apple the Fan-Boys spout on a pretty regular basis.

Hopefully Apple abandons their silly fake-pride based policy of blaming Microsoft when they moved away from the platform and instead assists Microsoft in getting Windows running once again on their Macs. That's a Win-Win-Win:  Apple Wins, Microsoft Wins and customers win.

I suspect though that Apple is trying to exploit the innate advantages of ARM based processors over x86 based processors.  That's silly.  it's just a matter of time before the PC industry also starts producing ARM based PCs and works with Microsoft to produce a viable version of Windows to run on them.

But, another reason Apple could have for blocking Windows is that they plan on MacOS integrating much more deeply and tightly into the iOS centric ecosystem Apple runs -- and Windows would interfere with bringing Macs fully into that walled garden.    Windows would provide an escape route.

So, rather than look silly and stupid, Federighi just blamed it all on Microsoft.   Slick!
Don't tell Microsoft that - they've been selling an ARM based laptop, running Windows, for years (since 2019?)...
    Surface Pro X (ARM laptop)

It is a licensing issue.  Microsoft only sells Windows for ARM to OEMs.  They have to change that decision.  Until they do, it would be silly for Apple to assist with Windows running on Mx Macs.

There's are reasons for that:  It's not yet fully developed as a retail product.

But go ahead nda believe that a company that makes its money selling software has decided not to sell software if you want.
Where the fuck do you come up with this stupid shit? “Fully developed” means absolutely nothing. As for being a retail product the Surface running Windows ARM has been selling for years successfully. Stop being like Trump and just admit when you’re wrong and out of your depth.

    LOL...  In your own words:
Where the fuck do you come up with this stupid shit?
Stop being like Trump and thinking the universe adapts to your distorted views.

If Microsoft is selling retail versions of ARM based Windows then go buy it and install it.
Otherwise stop with with ridiculous claims and insults.

  • Upcoming USB-C standard more than doubles power delivery to 240W

That's seriously impressive power.  While I know that charging MacBooks comes close to that 100w limit on USBc, are there any peripherals currently that use that much power over USBc?

I'm curious what the transfer speed will be with USB5?  Will it use a faster version of the Thunderbolt interface?
My 2019 16" MacBook Pro, Core i9, connected to Apple supplied 96W adapter is not enough sometimes.  When the processor and/or GPU are under heavy load, and the fans are blasting, it draws > 110W (show via iStat Menus), and the battery starts draining.  This has occurred during gaming. & when running 6 x Windows VMs (Microsoft AD environment/simulation).

Apple does not throttle the machine when power draw exceeds the AC adapter.  Most non-Apple systems slow down the machine to keep the power draw with the ability of the adapter.

  • Apple Platform Security Guide updated with Unlock with Apple Watch, Magic Keyboard details...

I updated both my watch and iPhone to the latest release.   But the unlock procedure has not changed -- the iphone has to see my full face.

Do I need to set a switch or something to activate this?
I liked how the watch can unlock my (now deceased) MacBook and would love it if it did the same for my iPhone.
Yes you do:  Settings app -> Face ID & Passcode -> UNLOCK WITH Apple Watch -> Toggle on.
