  • Seven years later, Apple was right to kill off the 3.5mm headphone jack

My partner's iphone 6s is still in daily operation because the headphone jack IS a killer feature.

I have never owned a pair if lightning-connected headphones.  I have however owned quite a number of lightning to headphone jack dongles of various qualities and price points.

  • How gaming on the Mac is getting better with macOS Ventura

Metal 3 may very well be great, but it does seem like a major (and perilous) assumption that any game developers will care to bring games to macos in the absence of native Vulkan support -- aside from the 3 games already announced of course.  Metal may be well established for mobile games but it is a remote island when it comes to AAA.

Another glaring omission is the complete lack of support for adaptive sync on external displays.  Apple is years behind in this department.

  • Compared: Mac Studio versus Mac Pro

Even ignoring configurability, it's striking how much more RAM the 2019 Mac Pro allows vs. the Mac Studio.  It seems unlikely to me that Apple will scale their "unified" memory up to those capacities on any Apple Silicon chip.  I bet when the Apple Silicon Mac Pro rolls around we see something analogous to Intel's 3D XPoint to allow memory capacities to scale and hopefully keep prices sub-stratospheric.

  • Apple's Mac Studio launches with new M1 Ultra chip in a compact package

Looks like Apple just ate Alder Lake for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They even hinted at a revised Mac Pro. I cannot even imagine.
Ah ... no. With a dual CPU architecture and $4000 entry level price, this is competing with the 26 core Xeon chips, not the 12th gen Core i9.
Or to look at it a little differently, i9-12900 is priced from around $489 for the CPU.  Going from m1max/32G/512G to m1ultra/64GB/1TB costs +$2000.

  • Smaller Mac Pro with Apple Silicon to join Mac mini refresh in 2022

Free from the need to support a modular GPU there's not much need for getting very many watts of power in and out of your workstation, so Apple can repeat all the mistakes of the 2013 Mac Pro.
